Investigating the Effect of Copper(II) Coordination Compound with Azodicarbonamide Ligand on the Phase‐Stabilization of Ammonium Nitrate

A novel copper(II) coordination compound was synthesized using azodicarbonamide (ADC) as ligand (Cu^II‐ADC). The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the synthesized material are investigated using X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Evaluation of the obtained results indicates that ADC coordinated to copper ions. Ammonium nitrate (AN) is an affordable oxidant, which is widely used in gas generators. Since AN shows crystal structure transformation in ambience temperature accompanied by a change in volume, its application is limited without phase stabilization. For phase stabilization of AN, AN/Cu^II‐ADC composite is prepared and its phase transitions is studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that AN_IV↔AN_III phase transition can be eliminated by hydrogen bonding between AN and Cu^II‐ADC.     

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of N,N′-di(thiopheneacetyl)diamines Series as Antitubercular Agents

The series of new N,N′-di(thiopheneacetyl)diamines derivatives, 8–17, were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis(TB), and the activity expressed as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in μ g/mL. Compound 13 was the only one determined to be active and exhibited a MIC 50 μg/mL, indicating that the alkyl chain-length of the diamines is critical for biological activity. This class of compound has not been evaluated before, and it could be a good starting point to find new lead compounds in the fight against multi-drug resistant TB.     

Reverse Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Acrylonitrile Catalyzed by FeCl3/Lactic Acid

Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of acrylonitrile (AN) was carried out using azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator, ferric trichloride anhydrous (FeCl₃)/lactic acid (LA) as catalyst system; a ratio of FeCl₃/LA was 1:2 gave the best control. RATRP of AN with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent gave the moderate polymerization rate and the narrowest polydispersity index (PDI). When FeCl₃ was replaced by CuBr₂, RATRP of AN showed a longer induction period. When Cu was added to the CuBr₂-based catalyst system, the induction period was reduced. ¹H-NMR spectra of PAN verified the possibility of controlled/living polymerization for future chain extension.     

A microfluidic device integrated with multichamber polymerase chain reaction and multichannel separation for genetic analysis

This work describes a microfluidic device integrated with multichamber polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and multichannel separation for parallel genetic analysis. The microdevice consists of three functional units: temperature control, multiple PCR (four chambers PCR), and multiple channel separation (four separation channels, each channel connected to a PCR chamber). Platinum (Pt)/titanium (Ti) microheater was used to ensure homogeneous temperature field, and Pt-chip sensor was used for temperature monitoring. The interface between chip-PCR and chip separation was simplified by connecting the PCR chamber with separation channel directly. After chip-PCR, PCR products were introduced into parallel separation channels for subsequent separation/detection by applying an electric field automatically. This microdevice was successfully applied for detection of pathogens including hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), and genotyping of human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 as well, demonstrating the feasibility of the integrated microdevice for parallel genetic analysis.
