On the Log-Laplace Equation for Nonlocal Operators Generating Sub-Markovian Semigroups

We consider the semilinear Cauchy problem for a class of pseudo-differential operators generating sub-Markovian semigroups. Solutions of such problems with negative definite nonlinearity play an important role in constructing branching measure-valued processes. We establish local existence and uniqueness of solutions in the context of the Dirichlet space associated to the problem. Comparison and global properties of solutions are also studied. Finite Groups Acting on Homology 3-Spheres: On a Result of M. Reni

 We give a list including all finite groups G which admit smooth orientation preserving actions on homology 3-spheres (arbitrary actions, i.e. possibly with fixed points; if the action is free then the group G has periodic cohomology and the classification of such groups is well known). The main work in this direction is due to M. Reni. In the present paper, we complete and extend his results for the case of nonsolvable groups G. A topological aspect of Sobolev mappings

Let be a connected open set, . We give a sufficient condition for a mapping , , to have the property that sgn is almost everywhere of one sign. Following the work of Müller, Spector, and Tang [MST], we give an application of our results to the theory of non-linear elasticity. Performance and analysis of saddle point preconditioners for the discrete steady-state Navier-Stokes equations

Summary. We examine the convergence characteristics of iterative methods based on a new preconditioning operator for solving the linear systems arising from discretization and linearization of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. With a combination of analytic and empirical results, we study the effects of fundamental parameters on convergence. We demonstrate that the preconditioned problem has an eigenvalue distribution consisting of a tightly clustered set together with a small number of outliers. The structure of these distributions is independent of the discretization mesh size, but the cardinality of the set of outliers increases slowly as the viscosity becomes smaller. These characteristics are directly correlated with the convergence properties of iterative solvers. Received August 5, 2000 / Published online June 20, 2001     

On the Metrical Theory of Continued Fraction Mixing Fibred Systems and Its Application to Jacobi-Perron Algorithm

 We study the metrical theory of fibred systems, in particular, in the case of continued fraction mixing systems. We get the limit distribution of the largest value of a continued fraction mixing stationary stochastic process with infinite expectation and some related results. These are analogous to J. Galambos, W. Philipp, and H. G. Diamond–J. D. Vaaler theorems for the regular continued fractions. As an application, we see that these theorems hold for Jacobi-Perron algorithm. Lower Bounds for the Height and Size of the Ideal Class Group in CM-Fields

 We prove that, under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, the exponent of the ideal class group of a CM-field goes to infinity with its absolute discriminant. This gives a positive answer to a question raised by Louboutin and Okazaki [4]. Received September 10, 2001; in revised form April 5, 2002     

A Bitangential Interpolation Problem on the Closed Unit Ball for Multipliers of the Arveson Space

We solve a bitangential interpolation problem for contractive multipliers on the Arveson space with an arbitrary interpolating set in the closed unit ball . The solvability criterion is established in terms of positive kernels. The set of all solutions is parametrized by a Redheffer transform. Submitted: February 2, 2002.     

Approximation of a laminated microstructure for a rotationally invariant,double well energy density

Summary. We give error estimates for the approximation of a laminated microstructure which minimizes the energy for a rotationally invariant, double well energy density . We present error estimates for the convergence of the deformation in the convergence of directional derivatives of the deformation in the “twin planes,” the weak convergence of the deformation gradient, the convergence of the microstructure (or Young measure) of the deformation gradients, and the convergence of nonlinear integrals of the deformation gradient. Discontinuous Galerkin method with a posterioriL_p(0,t_i) error estimate for second-kind Volterra problems

Summary. We consider a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method applied in time to a model Volterra equation of the second kind. A residual-based computable Galerkin-error estimate is derived for . This estimate does not explicitly contain the time step and therefore the time step control must be based on a heuristic criterion, the estimate can then be used to demonstrate the integrity, or otherwise, of the finite element solution. After performing some numerical experiments we conclude that this approach is at least competetive with classical discretizations since it is computationally simple to implement, but has the added advantage of reliable error feedback.
