This study presents the results of investigations of a hybrid electrostatic filtration system (HEFS), which combines an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and a fibrous filter installed downstream of the ESP. The particles escaping from the ESP carry large amount of charge and this can increase the filtration efficiency of the fibrous filter. The filtration characteristics, including the efficiency, pressure drop and ozone generation, were investigated experimentally. The influence of system parameters, including the filter type, applied voltage, and distance between the ESP and fibrous filter on the overall efficiency were also studied. The measured results show that utilizing the non-high-efficient fibrous filter to remove the charged particle could provide a much higher efficiency without adding the pressure drop due to the electrostatic force. If the efficiency was similar, the ozone generated by HEFS was much lower than that of the single ESP. The results proved that filter efficiency increased with a higher applied voltage and higher initial mechanical filtration efficiency. The distance between the filter and ESP had no influence on the system filtration efficiency. The efficiency of filter in HEFS supplied with the positive voltage was slightly lower than for the negative voltage. In addition, the mathematical model was utilized to model the air filter efficiency in HEFS. The modeled and measured results agreed reasonably. The use of comparative serum proteomic analysis has the potential to reveal protein expression changes present at different stages of disease progression. Depletion strategies allow for the enrichment of low-abundance proteins, which are more likely to be clinically significant biomarkers. We have observed that patient serum samples filtered through 0.22 microm cellulose acetate spin filters prior to depletion showed a variable level of retention of patient material on the upper part of the filter. This could potentially be related to the fasting status of the patient as a reduction in the lipid content of samples through the incorporation of a centrifugation step prior to filtration was found to reduce this effect. In order to determine if proteins were being selectively retained during filtration, a 2-D difference gel electrophoresis (2-D DIGE) experiment was performed. This demonstrated no significant selective retention of protein within crude serum samples. However, as this analysis was carried out on crude serum, it must be emphasised that protein loss could be manifest in the low-abundance proteins which would be masked in our analysis. Depletion of the retentate was not possible due to technical limitations, however based on our results a centrifugation step might act as an alternative to filtration in serum processing prior to depletion. 相似文献

Gel layer formation on the membrane surface during filtration plays a significant role in membrane fouling that, in many instances, controls water production and energy consumption in the treatment of waters and wastewaters. In this study, alginate is selected as a model of the polysaccharides prevalent in wastewaters which, on membrane filtration, may form a gel on the membrane surface which subsequently limits filtrate throughput. We show that over the range of the applied pressures of 11.7–135 kPa considered here, constant pressure ultrafiltration of alginate follows the behavior of cake filtration. The material properties of the alginate are determined by the employment of the previously developed steady-state filtration approach. The consolidation of the gel layer is found to be controlled by the hydraulic flow resistance rather than the rearrangement of particles. Under these conditions, it is valid to apply the derived material properties for the quantification of both constant pressure and constant flux filtration. The gel layer formed from alginate is very compressible and far from uniform over its depth. Within the range of the applied pressures, the gel layer is very porous with a water content of more than 96% but very low Darcy permeability of less than 1 × 10−17 m2. During hollow fiber membrane filtration, the local flux is neither uniform nor constant along the fiber length, resulting in non-uniformity of the growth rate, the average porosity and the thickness of the gel layer. We give a combinatorial treatment of transverse homology, a new invariant of transverse knots that is an extension of knot contact homology. The theory comes in several flavors, including one that is an invariant of topological knots and produces a three-variable knot polynomial related to the A-polynomial. We provide a number of computations of transverse homology that demonstrate its effectiveness in distinguishing transverse knots, including knots that cannot be distinguished by the Heegaard Floer transverse invariants or other previous invariants. 相似文献

Online solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography (SPE-LC) with microbore or capillary columns was significantly improved regarding robustness, as an easily installed automatic filtration and filter flushing (AFFL) procedure was added to avoid system clogging. Specifically, an injected sample is passed through a union containing a stainless steel filter prior to SPE trapping. The filter stops any particulate matter from reaching the SPE. When the SPE is subsequently connected to the LC column by column switching, a separate pump backflushes the filter-union, removing the particulate matter off the filter after each injection. This feature greatly reduced backpressure buildup over the entire system. 相似文献

An important issue for solving multistage stochastic programs consists in the approximate representation of the (multivariate) stochastic input process in the form of a scenario tree. In this paper, we develop (stability) theory-based heuristics for generating scenario trees out of an initial set of scenarios. They are based on forward or backward algorithms for tree generation consisting of recursive scenario reduction and bundling steps. Conditions are established implying closeness of optimal values of the original process and its tree approximation, respectively, by relying on a recent stability result in Heitsch, Römisch and Strugarek (SIAM J Optim 17:511–525, 2006) for multistage stochastic programs. Numerical experience is reported for constructing multivariate scenario trees in electricity portfolio management. 相似文献

Understanding the effectiveness of cabin air filters is important for assessing human exposure to ultrafine particles (UFPs) of vehicular origin. The filtration efficiency of vehicular UFPs with electric charges was investigated for different electric charge characteristics (charge state, charge polarity). The average filtration efficiency increased ∼10% as the electric charge state on the particles changed in distribution from lightly charged to highly charged. The enhancement of filtration efficiency due to electric charge was different at various filter-face air velocities. As electric charges increased, the filtration efficiency increased 12% and 9% at low air velocity (0.1 m/s) and high air velocity (0.5 m/s), respectively. The filter fiber material poses somewhat effect on the filtration efficiency change due to the electric charge. The effects of filter usage and charge polarity on filtration efficiency due to the electric charge were negligible. A coefficient was empirically derived and successfully accounts for the electric charge effect on UFP filtration efficiency. 相似文献
