One-dimensional model with rotational and liquid-crystalline phase transitions

A one-dimensional system of hard-rod particles with rotational-like internal degrees of freedom is considered. Particles interact with each other through the infinite-range, infinitely weak attractive Kac potential, and through a nearest-neighbor short-range potential. The latter depends also on the internal states of the interacting particles. Exact results for thermodynamic properties and for some correlation functions are obtained. It is found that the considered system exhibits several first-order transitions between phases with different rotational structure, i.e., with different ordering with respect to the internal degrees of freedom. The calculated equation of state seems to suggest that in the solutions of liquid-crystalline substances in neutral solvents there may exist regions in which the coefficient of thermal expansion is negative—an effect similar to that well known in liquid water.     

The polyphenolic profiles and antioxidant effects of Agastache rugosa Kuntze (Banga) flower,leaf, stem and root

Agastache rugosa Kuntze (Korean mint) is used as a spice and in folk medicine in East Asia. The present study identified a total of 18 polyphenols from the flower, leaf, stem and roots of this plant using high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Fourteen of these compounds had not previously been identified in these plant tissues. Each polyphenol was validated in comparison with external calibration curves constructed using structurally related compounds, with determination coefficients >0.9993. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.092–0.650 and 0.307–2.167 mg/L, respectively. Recoveries of 61.92–116.44% were observed at two spiking levels, with 0.91–11% precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (except anthraquinone spiked at 10 mg/L). Hydroxycinnamic acid was the most abundant compound in the root, while the flowers showed the highest total flavonoid level. Antioxidant activities, determined in terms of reducing power, Fe²⁺ chelating activity and the radical scavenging activities using α,α‐diphenyl‐β‐picrylhydrazyl and 2‐2?‐azino‐bis‐3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid, increased in a concentration‐dependent manner; the highest activity was identified in the stems, followed by leaves > flowers > roots. These findings indicate that A. rugosa is a good source of bioactive compounds and can be used as a functional food. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Development of hollow fiber‐supported liquid‐phase microextraction and HPLC‐DAD method for the determination of pyrethroid metabolites in human and rat urine

A simple hollow fiber liquid‐phase microextraction method for the determination of synthetic pyrethroid metabolites, 3‐phenoxybenzoic acid and 4‐hydroxy‐3‐phenoxybenzoic acid, in human and rat urine was developed and validated. A polypropylene hollow fiber tightly fitted onto a Nylon rod and impregnated with organic solvent served as a disposable extraction device. Desorption of analytes was carried out in NaOH solution, analyzed further by gradient HPLC and diode array detection method. Important factors were identified using Taguchi OA16 (4⁵) orthogonal array design and further optimized using univariate approach. The optimum method performance was observed when 1 mL of urine hydrolyzed with 0.2 mL of concentrated HCl was further supplemented with 100 mg of NaCl and extracted for 120 min into dihexyl ether immobilized in the pores of the hollow fiber. Metabolites were desorbed into 0.1 mL of 0.1 M NaOH for another 120 min. Limits of detection and quantitation of 15 and 50 ng/mL were obtained for both analytes. Relative standard deviations of 1.6–12.6% over the linear range (50–10,000 ng/mL, r > 0.9906) were observed. Intra‐ and inter‐day accuracies of the method ranged from 98.3 to 109.5% and from 93.3 to 110.9%, respectively. Guest-Host Type Liquid Crystal Displays

Eight modes of the guest-host cells (GH-cells), in which types of dye, liquid crystal and their alignments are adequately combined, are surveyed, and the color contrast of each mode is calculated.

Three modes among them are of positive type display, that is, colored patterns on the colorless background contrary to the initially proposed fundamental GH-cell. Another three modes are the GH-cells without polarizer, by which bright display can be obtained.

Light stability of dyes are also discussed and lifetimes of various dyes are estimated by accelerated life test. As a result, it is found that diazo-and axomethine-dayes without thiazole groups as well as anthraqunone-dyes have satisfying lifetimes as long as they are used indoors.     

Shear-induced band texture of side group liquid crystalline polymers

The shear-induced band texture of conventional end-on fixed side group liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) has been investigated by using polarizing optical microscopy (POM), small angle light scattering (SALS) and infra-red dichroism techniques. The band spacing is about 1 μm, which increases very slightly on increasing the temperature of shearing and is independent of shearing rate within the range studied. The band texture is not seen to exhibit an interchange of dark and bright bands on rotation of the sample with respect to the polarizer/analyser, but a typical periodical structure is reflected by the SALS patterns of the band texture. The relaxation behaviour of the bands indicates that the band texture formed here is the result of the orderly aligning of domains exhibiting the focal-conic texture, and this is totally different from the case of main chain LCPs where the band texture is substantially an optical effect of the periodic zigzag or sinusoidal structure of parallel aligned microfibrils. Infra-red dichroism and rotating parallel-plate shearing measurements show that the axes of the backbone of the polymer tend to orient in the shearing direction and the end-on fixed mesogenic side groups tend to align perpendicular to the shearing direction.

The regioselective iodination of activated arenes has been achieved in the presence of phenyltrimethylammonium dichloroiodate and ionic liquid. The reaction has been carried out by both conventional heating as well as by microwave irradiation.
