Diphenylmethane transformations over boron trifluoride modified alumina and silica-alumina

Transformations of diphenylmethane were investigated in a flow system in the presence of alumina and silica-alumina modified with boron trifluoride at atmospheric pressure and elevated temperatures. Hydrogen transfer reaction was observed on addition of tetralin to the substrate stream. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

On the isomorphism problem in the class of extensions of a free group by an infinite cyclic group

In the automorphism group of a rank 3 free group we find two nonconjugate automorphisms whose mapping tori are isomorphic groups.     

Locality Hypothesis and the Speed of Light

The locality hypothesis is generally considered necessary for the study of the kinematics of non-inertial systems in special relativity. In this paper we discuss this hypothesis, showing the necessity of an improvement, in order to get a more clear understanding of the various concepts involved, like coordinate velocity and standard velocity of light. Concrete examples are shown, where these concepts are discussed.     

Transformations in optics: Novel perspectives,approaches, applications and implementations

This paper summarizes a set of novel techniques for obtaining optical transformations, which are useful tools for signal processing. Then the paper focuses on deriving several interesting discrete transformations. The discussed transforms include continuous fractional transformations, hybrid transforms and discrete transform kernels.     

Darboux transformation and solitons of Yang-Mills-Higgs equations in R2,1

The Darboux transformations for soliton equations are applied to the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations.New solutions can be obtained from a known one via universal and purely algebraic formulas. SU(N) soliton solutions are constructed with explicit formulas. The interaction of solitons is described by the splitting theorem:each p-soliton is splitting into p single solitons asymptotically as t →±∞.     

Symmetry of the Barochronous Motions of a Gas

We study the system of nonlinear differential equations which expresses the constancy of the algebraic invariants of the Jacobian matrix for smooth vector fields in three-dimensional space. This system is equivalent to the equations of gas dynamics which describe the barochronous motions of a gas (the pressure and density depend only on the time). We present the results of computation of the admissible local Lie group and construction of the general solution of the system. We mention a few new problems that arise here.     

An Extension of the Coordinate Transformation Method for Open-Loop Nash Equilibria

In Leitmann (Ref. 1), a coordinate transformation method was introduced to obtain global solutions for free problems in the calculus of variations. This direct method was extended and broadened in Carlson (Ref. 2) and later in Leitmann (Ref. 3). The applicability of the original work of Leitmann (Ref. 1) was further developed in Dockner and Leitmann (Ref. 4) to include the class of open-loop dynamic games. In the present work, we improve the results of Ref. 4 in two directions. First, we enlarge the class of open-loop dynamic games to permit coupling among the dynamic equations via the states of the players; second, we incorporate the modifications given in Refs. 2 and 3. Our results greatly increase the applicability of this method. An example arising from the harvesting of a renewable resource is presented to illustrate the utility of our results.     

Algebraic and Differential Nonlinear Superposition Formulas

Knowledge of the Lax pair and the Darboux transformation for a completely integrable system provides an iterative approach for generating exact solutions. This approach involves solving for the eigenfunction of the Lax pair at each step. But this process can be considerably simplified using the Bäcklund transformation and Bianchi's permutability theorem. This allows constructing the so-called nonlinear superposition formula, which provides a new solution of the system in terms of three previous solutions. The advantage of this approach is that the differential order of the nonlinear superposition formulas is lower than that of the Lax pairs, and in some cases, these formulas reduce to algebraic equations. We consider the construction of new nonlinear superposition formulas in the form of both differential equations and algebraic equations.     

Chemical component exchange and transport phenomena accompanying phase transformations in minerals and materials

Chemical component exchange and transport phenomena accompanying the multistage phase transformations of several silicate and aluminosilicate-phosphate glasses and borates as model systems are considered. It is demonstrated that the component transport limitations modify the role of chemical affinity influence and determine the sequence of new compound formation.The work was supported by grant P040703406 from the National Committee of Scientific Research of Poland.     

A Miura of the Painlevé I Equation and Its Discrete Analogs

We present Miura transformations for the continuous and several discrete Painlev\'e I equations. In the case of the continuous P_I, we use the Hamiltonian formulation of the Painlev\'e equations and show that there exists a Miura transformation between P_I and the binomial, second degree, equation of Cosgrove SD_V. In the case of the discrete P_I's we obtain two different kinds of Miuras. One kind relates a d-P_I to some other d-P_I while the other leads to discrete four-point equations which are the discrete analogs of the derivative of Cosgrove's equation SD_V.
