The current work examines the role of working-memory capacity in problem solving in science education. It treats an information-processing model with tools of complexity theory. Nonlinear methods are used to correlate the subjects' achievement scores with working-memory capacity. Data have been taken from the achievement scores in simple organic-synthesis chemical problems. The subjects (N = 319) were in grade twelve (age 17–18). Problems of various Z-demands (that is the number of steps needed to solve the problem) from two to eight were used. Rank-order sequences of the subjects, according to their scores, were generated, and each score was then replaced by the value of subject's working memory capacity measured by the digit backward span test. Then the sequences were mapped onto a one-dimensional random walk model and when treated as dynamic flows were found to possess fractal geometry with characteristics depending on the Z-demand of the problem. The findings were interpreted using concepts from complexity theory, such as correlation exponents, fractal dimensions and entropy. The null hypothesis was tested with surrogate data. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate market depth as a stock market liquidity dimension. A new methodology for market depth measurement exactly based on Shannon information entropy for high-frequency data is introduced and utilized. The proposed entropy-based market depth indicator is supported by an algorithm inferring the initiator of a trade. This new indicator seems to be a promising liquidity measure. Both market entropy and market liquidity can be directly measured by the new indicator. The findings of empirical experiments for real-data with a time stamp rounded to the nearest second from the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) confirm that the new proxy enables us to effectively compare market depth and liquidity for different equities. Robustness tests and statistical analyses are conducted. Furthermore, an intra-day seasonality assessment is provided. Results indicate that the entropy-based approach can be considered as an auspicious market depth and liquidity proxy with an intuitive base for both theoretical and empirical analyses in financial markets. 相似文献

An analysis is presented for the primary resonance of a clamped-hinged beam, which occurs when the frequency of excitation is near one of the natural frequencies,n . Three mode interaction (2 31 and 3 1 + 22) is considered and its influence on the response is studied. The case of two mode interaction (2 31) is also considered to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. The straight beam experiencing mid-plane stretching is governed by a nonlinear partial differential equation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system of nonautonomous ordinary differential equations. The method of multiple scales is applied to solve the system. Steady-state responses and their stability are examined. Results of numerical investigations show that there exists no significant difference between both modal interactions' influences on the responses. 相似文献

Superposition of oscillatory shear imposed from the boundary and through pressure gradient oscillations and simple shear is investigated. The integral fluid with fading memory shows flow enhancement effects due to the nonlinear structure. Closed-form expressions for the change in the mass transport rate are given at the lowest significant order in the perturbation algorithm. The elasticity of the liquid plays as important a role in determining the enhancement as does the shear dependent viscosity. Coupling of shear thinning and elasticity may produce sharp increases in the flow rate. The interaction of oscillatory shear components may generate a steady flow, either longitudinal or orthogonal, resulting in increases in flow rates akin to resonance, and due to frequency cancellation, even in the absence of a mean gradient. The electronic switching properties of thioacetamide dimer (TAD) were investigated using the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with density functional theory for design of a novel molecular switch. The H‐bonded TAD can be converted upon hole‐trapping to a three‐electron (3e)‐bonded configuration with a S∴S linkage which could provide a more favorable channel for charge transfer than the before. The redox‐induced configuration conversion between the H‐bonded and the 3e‐bonded TADs could govern the charge migration through the molecular junction with a considerable difference in conduction currents. The calculated I–V characteristic curves of two configurations exhibit a switching behavior with an On‐Off ratio in a range of about 4.3–7.6 within the applied voltages.
