Let u be a sequence of positive integers which grows essentially as a geometric progression. We give a criterion on u in terms of its distribution modulo d, d = 1, 2,..., under which the set of positive integers expressible by the sum of a prime number and an element of u has a positive lower density. This criterion is then checked for some second order linear recurrence sequences. It follows, for instance, that the set of positive integers of the form p + [(2 + √3)n], where p is a prime number and n is a positive integer, has a positive lower density. This generalizes a recent result of Enoch Lee. In passing, we show that the periods of linear recurrence sequences of order m modulo a prime number p cannot be "too small" for most prime numbers p.  相似文献

In this paper we report how children (aged 8) developed their mathematical understanding through number tasks based on the Fibonacci sequence (Bamboo numbers) used in the context of a Substantial Learning Environment (SLE), which is designed to be mathematically rich, have a clear purpose and give opportunities to utilise mathematical thinking. The flexible nature of the SLEs makes it possible for teachers and children to explore various mathematical patterns. To capture children's activities when working within SLEs, we make particular reference to Pegg and Tall's work in 2005, and consider a theoretical framework based on the SOLO taxonomy (Biggs and Collis 1982) and the developmental process of understanding mathematical concepts. It was found that the key progression to be made through learning using our Bamboo number-based SLEs is from Multi-structural to Relational levels. It was also suggested that it is difficult for many children to understand the structural aspects of number patterns.  相似文献

A discrete two-stage model which describes the dynamics of a population where juveniles and adults compete for different resources is developed. A motivating example is the green tree frog (Hyla cinerea) where tadpoles and adult frogs feed on separate resources. First, continuous breeding is assumed and the asymptotic behavior of the resulting autonomous model is fully analyzed. It is shown that the unique interior equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when the inherent net reproductive number is greater than one. However, when the inherent net reproductive number is less than one, the population becomes extinct. Then a seasonal breeding described by a periodic birth rate with period 2 is assumed. It is proved that for this nonautonomous model a period two solution is globally asymptotically stable when the inherent net reproductive number is greater than one and when the inherent net reproductive number is less than one the population becomes extinct. Finally, the advantage (in terms of maximizing the number of juveniles and adults in the population over a fixed time period) of having a seasonal breeding is studied by comparing the average of the juvenile and adult numbers of the periodic solution for the nonautonomous model to the equilibrium solution of the autonomous model. Our results indicate that for high birth rates the equilibrium of the autonomous model is higher than the average of the two cycle solution. Therefore, all other factors being equal, seasonal breeding appears to be deleterious to populations with high birth rates. However, for low birth rates seasonal breeding can be beneficial. It is also shown that for a range of birth rates the nonautnomous model is persistent while the solution to the autonomous model goes to extinction.  相似文献

We give an integral formula for the first Pontrjagin number of a compact almost Hermitian surface and derive curvature identities from the integral formula based on the fundamental fact that the first Pontrjagin number in the deRham cohomology group is a topological invariant. The steady state burning rate of vertically oriented slabs of poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) is numerically investigated. Model predictions are compared with measurements and results of the laminar boundary layer (LBL) theory. The numerical model provides a solution of the Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes equations coupled with sub-models for turbulence, combustion, soot production and radiation. The modelling of condensed phase processes is based on the one-dimensional heat transfer equation and pyrolysis is treated as a phase change using the latent heat approach. Results show that the pyrolysing region can be divided into three regions. In the laminar part of the flow (Gr x < 4.3 × 107), the predicted normalised burning rate, [mdot] p x, is a power-law function of Gr x with an exponent close to that of the LBL theory, surface re-radiation being the primary source of discrepancies. From the LBL theory for free flow, it is demonstrated that the local burning rate is inversely proportional to the shear velocity gradient. This is globally confirmed by numerical model results. At Gr x = 4.3 × 107 the change in slope of the burning rate observed experimentally, which indicates the end of the laminar flow region, is reproduced numerically. From Gr x = 2.5 × 109 model results show that the surface mass flux of pyrolyzate increases with x, in agreement with experimental data in literature.  相似文献
