A novel covalent functionalisation of poly (styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) with 4-amino benzo-9-crown-3 ether

The grafting of 4-amino benzo-9-crown-3 ether to poly (styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) has been described. The covalent grafting of crown ether has led to a considerable increase in the solubility of polymer in organic solvents such as dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran. The highest solubility was attained in DMF and DMSO. The covalently bonded 4-benzo-9-crown-3 ether allowed the hosting of Li⁺. The covalently grafted crown ether to polymer was identified by infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis methods.     

SNAr reactions of β-substituted porphyrins and the synthesis of meso substituted tetrabenzoporphyrins

Reaction of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin with LiR reagents containing functional groups readily yields meso substituted derivatives suitable for further transformations with residues such as -p-C₆H₅Br, -p-C₆H₅-CCH, -p-C₆H₅-NH₂ or -(CH₂)₃-CHCH₂. Similar reactions of tetrabenzoporphyrin with alkyllithium reagents afforded the first entry into meso mono- and dialkylsubstituted tetrabenzoporphyrins while reaction of bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-type masked isoindole precursors with LiR followed by in situ retro-Diels-Alder reaction also afforded the 5-phenyl and 5,10-diphenyltetrabenzoporphyrins in high purity.     

A convenient microwave assisted arylzinc generation-Negishi coupling protocol

Arylzinc reagents were readily prepared from aryl iodides using a Zn-Cu couple in a microwave environment. A sequential arylzinc formation-Negishi cross-coupling protocol suitable for parallel high-throughput synthesis has been developed.     

Asymmetric catalytic anhydride openings via carbon-based nucleophiles

The asymmetric desymmetrization of cyclic anhydrides via the addition of carbon-based nucleophiles has been the focus of considerable levels of interest because it leads to optically active products. Over the past 20 years, a variety of different catalytic asymmetric alkylation reactions have been developed for the desymmetrization of cyclic anhydrides using different metal reagents as nucleophiles and using chiral ligands. Convenient and easy access to 2-hydroxycyclopent-2-enones from acylcyanohydrins

A convenient access to 2-hydroxycyclopentenones was designed from acylcyanohydrins, by using titanacyclopropane complexes as nucleophilic partners and an intramolecular aldol condensation in basic conditions. The development of a one-pot procedure allows a step- and atom-economic process, and the use of Grignard reagents other than ethylmagnesium bromide provided valuable 3,4-disubstituted 2-hydroxycyclopentenones. The utility of the hydroxy group was illustrated by further functionalization of the α-position using palladium-mediated cross-coupling reactions.

One-pot synthesis of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes from aryl ketones and the Ruppert–Prakash reagent

A new synthesis of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes from aromatic ketones and (trifluoromethyl) trimethylsilane is described. The reaction involves nucleophilic trifluoromethylation and elimination of trimethylsilanol, which are performed within one reaction flask.     

Teflon Magnetic Stirring Capsules (TMSC) as a Practical and Reusable Delivery System for Sensitive Reagents and Catalysts

The development of a user-friendly reusable laboratory equipment for the delivery of sensitive reagents and catalysts is described. The tightness of these Teflon Magnetic Stirring Capsules (TMSC) is ensured by the magnetic force and release of the reagent inside the solution is triggered by adjusting the stirring rate so that the centrifuge force exceeds the magnetic force. They can be loaded with several chemicals at the same time and do operate across a broad range of temperatures. The inertness of Teflon facilitates reaction purification.     

Fluorotris(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)methane: synthesis, characterization and reactivity

The hitherto elusive title compound was synthesized and characterized with the aim to study its potential as a carbon-based (“CF-type”) electrophilic fluorination reagent. A detailed discussion of its structure, properties and reactivity is based on experimental studies as well as on molecular modeling.
