Use of non-segmented flow,post-columns reaction detection with miniaturized HPLC systems

Summary The use of non-segmented flow, post-column reaction detection is evaluated for use with miniaturized HPLC. Non-segmented open-tubular reactors with internal diameters 0.1 mm to 0.25 mm and packed-bed reactors with internal diameters of 1 mm, filled with 5 and 10 m particles are evaluated theoretically and experimentally with respect to band broadening and pressure drop characteristics. An integrated system consisting of miniaturized HPLC (1 mm i. d.) columns and compatible hardware is described. An example of the separation of catecholamines is given.

Meldrum's acid (2) is acylated by diketen affording the acylMeldrum's acid3. In aqueous bicarbonate its 3-oxogroup is selectively reduced by sodium tetrahydroborate giving the alcohol4, which readily undergoes cyclization in refluxing dioxane leading to the title pyrone7. Under identical conditions3 produces the pyrone6 with the pyrone carboxylic acid5 as intermediate.

     

Aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction of salicyl N-tosylimines with methyl vinyl ketone, ethyl vinyl ketone or phenyl vinyl ketone

Reactions of salicyl N-tosylimines with methyl vinyl ketone, ethyl vinyl ketone or phenyl vinyl ketone proceeded smoothly under mild conditions to give the corresponding chromanes or aza-Baylis-Hillman adducts in moderate to excellent yields in the presence of phosphine or nitrogen Lewis base.     

Application of Discrete Wavelet Transform in the Analysis of Nonlinear Chemical System

Oscillations of species concentration are phenomena accompanying several types of electrochemical and purely chemical processes. Importance of analyzing of such processes results from both scientific and practical reasons. In the paper the authors deal with investigation of time dependent spectra of various stages of Belousov-Zhabotinsky type chemical oscillations. As the analytical tool the discrete wavelet transform is proposed.

The regioselectivity of the reactions of perimidine with cinnamic acids in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) depends on the P₂O₅ content. Procedures were developed for the synthesis of 4(9)- and 6(7)-cinnamoylperimidines. Cyclization of the latter under the action of an excess of AlBr₃ was accompanied by dearylation to form 6-hydroxy-1,3-diazapyrene.     

Copper—A “Modern” Bioelement

Copper is a bioessential element in biology with truly unique chemical characteristics in its two relevant oxidation states +I and +II. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the elucidation of the frequently surprising biochemistry of this trace element. Those advances were especially furthered through mutual stimulation involving results from biochemistry, molecular biology, and medicine on one hand and the synthesis as well as the structural and spectroscopic characterization of low molecular weight model complexes on the other. The most notable features of protein-bound active copper are its almost exclusive function in the metabolism of O₂ or N/O compounds (NO, N₂O) and its frequent association with oxidizing organic and inorganic radicals such as tyrosyl, semiquinones, superoxide, or nitrosyl. This unique biological role of copper can be rationalized given its chemical and assumed evolutionary background.     

Assessing the non-specific hydroxyl radical scavenging properties of melanoidins in a Fenton-type reaction system

Soluble high molecular weight fraction (>10 kDa, named melanoidins) was isolated from Maillard reaction model systems, coffee, beer and sweet wine by ultrafiltration. Deoxyribose method was adjusted for measuring the hydroxyl radical scavenging properties of melanoidins. The presence of competitive melanoidins with deoxyribose for OH decrease the rate of deoxyribose degradation. Possible interferences to the deoxyribose method have been evaluated. Most of isolated melanoidins exhibited a variable and measurable non-site-specific hydroxyl scavenging activity in a Fenton-type reaction system. The iron reducing properties of melanoidins at the reaction conditions were evaluated with ferrozine. It has established a kinetic approach to assess the second rate constants of hydroxyl radical scavenging reactions of melanoidins. This approach may be a valuable tool for addressing the structure-activity relationships of melanoidins in a future. There is no correlation between browning (absorbance at 420 nm) and efficiency for scavenging hydroxyl radicals in solution.     

Lattice Dynamics in LaTa2-2xNb2xVO9-δ (x=0–0.1) Solid Solutions

The oxygen nonstoichiometry (x) of LaTa_2-2xNb_2xVO₉- (x = 0–0.1) solid solutions was studied using Xray phase analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, and radiospectroscopy. A correlation was found between (x) and the unit cell volume V(x) of the solid solutions. It was shown that the infrared spectra of LaTa₂VO₉- change in passing from = 0 to 0. The structural position of the oxygen vacancy in LaTa_2-2xNb_2xVO₉- is discussed.
