6 激光冷却和捕陷中性原子技术的应用 前面已经提到,激光冷却和捕获中性原子技术最主要的应用是在精密计量和超冷原子物理两个方面.在精密计量方面最为典型的是可用于原子频标的"原子喷泉"(atomic fountain)技术;而在超冷原子物理方面最为典型的是玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚(Bose-Einstein condensation)和原子波激射器(atom laser)的实现.

Detection of modulated molecular beams with electron bombardment detectors

By means of refinements in the modulated molecular beam technique the signal-to-noise ratio can be greatly improved, and differential cross-sections, for collision of molecuies of the same species, can be measured. This was accomplished by combining beam modulation and phase sensitive detection with very sharp turning on the front end of the lock-in-amplifier and long integration times on the output. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio of the Ar-Ar system as a function of integration time was investigated using two different types of electron bombardment detectors an Aberth ion-source and a quadrupole mass filter. With an integration time of 40 min the estimated upper limit to the signal-to-noise ratio is 1500 to 1 for the Aberth ion-source. Using quadrupole mass filter with an integration time of 60 min the estimated upper limit to the signal-to-noise ratio is 5 × 10⁴ to 1. For chemical kinetics studies this ratio may be two orders of magnitude higher. Measurements were carried out at the Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, USA.     

Are the New Physics Contributions from the Left-Right Symmetric Model Important for the Indirect CP Violation in the Neutral B Mesons?

No Heading Several works analyzing the new physics contributions from the Left-Right Symmetric Model to the CP violation phenomena in the neutral B mesons can be found in the literature. These works exhibit interesting and experimentally sensible deviations from the Standard Model predictions but at the expense of considering a low right scale υ_R around 1 TeV. However, when we stick to the more conservative estimates for υ_R, which say that it must be at least 10⁷ GeV, no experimentally sensible deviations from the Standard Model appear for indirect CP violation. This estimate for υ_R arises when the generation of neutrino masses is considered. In spite of the fact that this scenario is much less interesting and says nothing new about both the CP violation phenomenon and the structure of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, this possibility must be taken into account for the sake of completeness and when considering the see-saw mechanism that provides masses to the neutrino sector. ¹ Associate researcher of the Centro Internacional de Física, Ciudad Universitaria, Bogotá D.C., Colombia.
