Local Feasible QP-Free Algorithms for the Constrained Minimization of SC1 Functions

We consider the problem of minimizing an SC¹ function subject to inequality constraints. We propose a local algorithm whose distinguishing features are that: (a) a fast convergence rate is achieved under reasonable assumptions that do not include strict complementarity at the solution; (b) the solution of only linear systems is required at each iteration; (c) all the points generated are feasible. After analyzing a basic Newton algorithm, we propose some variants aimed at reducing the computational costs and, in particular, we consider a quasi-Newton version of the algorithm.     

Pump–probe second harmonic generation study of ultrafast spin dynamics in semiconductor multilayers

We report the first application of pump–probe second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements to characterize optically induced magnetization in non‐magnetic multilayer semiconductors. In the experiment, spin‐polarized electrons are excited selectively by a pump beam in the GaAs layer of GaAs/GaSb/InAs structures. However, the resulting net magnetization manifests itself through the induced SHG probe signal from the GaSb/InAs interface, thus indicating a spin‐polarized electron transport across the heterostructure. We find that the magnetization dynamics are governed by an interplay between the spin density evolution at the interfaces and the spin relaxation. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Tomographic reconstruction using heuristic Monte Carlo methods

A tomographic reconstruction method based on Monte Carlo random searching guided by the information contained in the projections of radiographed objects is presented. In order to solve the optimization problem, a multiscale algorithm is proposed to reduce computation. The reconstruction is performed in a coarse-to-fine multigrid scale that initializes each resolution level with the reconstruction of the previous coarser level, which substantially improves the performance. The method was applied to a real case reconstructing the internal structure of a small metallic object with internal components, showing excellent results.

Summary This article provides a glimpse of some of the highlights of the joint work of Endre Csáki and Pál Révész since 1979. The topics of this short exploration of the rich stochastic milieu of this inspiring collaboration revolve around Brownian motion, random walks and their long excursions, local times and additive functionals, iterated processes, almost sure local and global central limit theorems, integral functionals of geometric stochastic processes, favourite sites--favourite values and jump sizes for random walk and Brownian motion, random walking in a random scenery, and large void zones and occupation times for coalescing random walks.     

Investigations of low- and high-spin states of <Superscript>132</Superscript>La

The fusion evaporation reaction ¹²²Sn(¹⁴N, 4n)¹³²La was used to populate the high-spin states of ¹³²La at the beam energy of 60 MeV. A new band consisting of mostly E2 transitions has been discovered. This band has the interesting links to the ground state 2^- and the isomeric state 6^-. A new transition of energy 351 keV connecting the low-spin states of the positive-parity band based on the πh _11/2 ⊗ νh _11/2 particle configuration, has been found. This has played a very important role in resolving the existing ambiguities and inconsistencies in the spin assignment of the band head. On a free boundary problem for the Reynolds equation derived from the Stokes system with Tresca boundary conditions

The asymptotic behaviour of a Stokes flow with Tresca free boundary friction conditions when one dimension of the fluid domain tends to zero is studied. A specific Reynolds equation associated with variational inequalities is obtained and uniqueness is proved.     

On the Application of the Auxiliary Problem Principle

The auxiliary problem principle (APP) derives from a general theory on decomposition-coordination methods establishing a comprehensive framework for both one-level and two-level methods. In this paper, the results of the two-level methods of APP are specialized for an efficient application to some engineering problems.     

Bounds to optimal burn‐in and optimal work size

Burn‐in is a widely used method to improve the quality of products or systems after they have been produced. In this paper, we consider the problem of determining the optimal burn‐in time and optimal work size maximizing the long‐run average amount of work saved per time unit in the computer applications. Assuming that the underlying lifetime distribution of the computer has an initially decreasing or/and eventually increasing failure rate function, an upper bound for the optimal burn‐in time is derived for each fixed work size and a uniform (with respect to the burn‐in time) upper bound for the optimal work size is also obtained. Furthermore, it is shown that a non‐trivial lower bound for the optimal burn‐in time can be derived if the underlying lifetime distribution has a large initial failure rate. 190区超形变核中转动带的组态结构

通过系统研究A～190区超形变核中转动带的转动惯量、角动量顺排、旋称分裂随转动频率的变化规律, 结合我们用处理对力的粒子数守恒方法的计算结果, 对A～190区所有转动带的组态结构给出了一个整体的描述. 绝大多数超形变带都建立在强耦合轨道上, 例如中子[512]5/2, [624]9/2. 少数超形变带则建立在高j闯入轨道上, 即中子[761]3/2, [752]5/2. 根据我们提出的组态结构所进行的理论计算结果表明, A～190区所有转动带的一般行为、反常变化和带交叉都得到了满意的解释.
