Carbon isotopes of breath CO2 vary depending on diet and fuel substrate used. This study examined if exercise-induced δ13C-CO2 changes in substrate utilization were distinguishable from baseline δ13C-CO2 variations in a population with uncontrolled diet, and compared hair isotope values and food logs to develop an isotope model of diet. Study participants included nine women with diverse Body Mass Index (BMI), age, ancestry, exercise history, and diet. Breath samples were collected prior to and up to 12?h after a 5- or 10?K walk/run. Indirect calorimetry was measured with a smartphone-enabled mobile colorimetric device, and a field-deployable isotope analyzer measured breath δ13C-CO2 values. Diet was assessed by food logs and δ13C, δ15N of hair samples. Post-exercise δ13C-CO2 values increased by 0.54?±?1.09‰ (1 sd, n?=?9), implying enhanced carbohydrate burning, while early morning δ13C-CO2 values were lower than daily averages (p?=?0.0043), indicating lipid burning during overnight fasting. Although diurnal δ13C-CO2 variation (1.90?±?0.77‰) and participant baseline range (3.06‰) exceeded exercise-induced variation, temporal patterns distinguished exercise from dietary isotope effects. Hair δ13C and δ15N values were consistent with a new dietary isotope model. Notwithstanding the small number of participants, this study introduces a novel combination of techniques to directly monitor energy balance in free-living individuals.  相似文献

Objective: It is important for hemodialysis patients to exercise while their nutritional status is being monitored. This study aimed to examine the difference in physical exercise function and the effect of exercise intervention in hemodialysis patients who were divided into two groups (high-nutrition and low-nutrition groups) based on the serum albumin levels. Method: A total of 26 outpatients (18 men and 8 women) undergoing hemodialysis (age: 66 ± 10 years) were included in this study. The patients'' body composition data (weight, body mass index, percentage of body fat, fat-free mass, and total body water) and physical functions (grip strength, knee extensor strength, open-eyed one-legged standing time, long sitting trunk anteflexion, and 6-minute walking distance [6MWD] test) were measured. The intervention was supine ergometer exercise during hemodialysis, and the patients exercised for 30 minutes during hemodialysis thrice a week. The intervention period was three months. Results: Compared to the high-nutrition group, the low-nutrition group showed a significant decrease in muscle strength. Furthermore, long sitting trunk anteflexion in the high-nutrition group and 6MWD in the low-nutrition group improved significantly after the intervention. Conclusion: The result of this study may indicate that 6MD can be improved by exercise during dialysis, regardless of nutritional status. It is said that low nutritional status has a negative impact on survival rate; thus, considering the impact on survival rate, it is hemodialysis patients with a low nutritional status that should be considered to introduce more active exercise during dialysis.  相似文献

It was known that the thermal response varies according to some variables. Until now, there are no studies that have investigated the relationship of skin temperature and heart rate during and after the workout, either the thermal behavior during postural changes. Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of skin temperature and heart rate, during exercise and up to an hour of recovery (with postural change), performed in two different intensities sessions (70% and 85% of 10 repetitions maximum) and observe the correlation between them. Method: This was a short longitudinal study, carried out with women aged from 18 to 30 years. A sample of 31 untrained women, aged 18 and 30 was used. The volunteers were randomized into two groups: Biceps Group (BG), with 15 women, and Quadriceps Group (QG) with 16 women. Results: During and after completion of the exercise session, there was a significant reduction in skin temperature on the active muscles in both groups (BG and QG), with similar thermal responses for the two intensities studied (70% and 85%) to the minute 15 (which marks the end of the recovery in the standing position). From minute 15 to minute 20–60, the skin temperature increases abruptly and significantly, returning to levels close to those observed before exercise. Conclusion: There were no statistical differences in thermal response to exercises in 70% or 85% of 10RM. There is a negative correlation between heart rate and skin temperature when untrained women perform anaerobic exercise. It was observed that after a change of posture (from a standing position to a sitting posture) skin temperature increased abruptly and significantly.  相似文献

First-class course construction is the foundation of first-class undergraduate education construction. Based on the understanding of the "Two properties and one degree" standard of first-class course, key characteristics of the first-class course construction are summarized as accurate positioning, clear teaching goals, good construction foundation, advanced pedagogy, first-class construction, remarkable effectiveness and preferential demonstration. Taking the construction of first-class physical chemistry course in Shandong University as an example, the course orientation, the determination of teaching objectives and the design and implementation of the teaching are introduced. The practice and experience of the course construction are demonstrated in five aspects as first-class foundation, first-class teachers, first-class resources, first-class pedagogical ideas and first-class achievements. In Clark and Lovric (Suggestion for a theoretical model for secondary–tertiary transition in mathematics, Math. Educ. Res. J. 20(2) (2008), pp. 25–37) we began developing a model for the secondary–tertiary transition in mathematics, based on the anthropological notion of a rite of passage. We articulated several reasons why we believe that the educational transition from school to university mathematics should be viewed (and is) a rite of passage, and then examined certain aspects of the process of transition. Present article is a continuation of our study, resulting in an enhanced version of the model. In order to properly address all aspects of transition (such as a number of cognitive and pedagogical issues) we enrich our model with the notions of cognitive conflict (conceptual change) and culture shock (although defined and used in contexts that differ from the transition context, nevertheless, we found these notions highly relevant). After providing further justification for the application of our model to transition in mathematics, we discuss its many implications in detail. By critically examining current practices, we enhance our understanding of the many issues involved in the transition. The core section ‘Messages and implications of the model’ is divided into subsections that were determined by the model (role of community, discontinuity of the transition process, shock of the new, role of time in transition, universality of transition, expectations and responsibilities, transition as a real event). Before making final conclusions, we examine certain aspects of remedial efforts.  相似文献

A flexible load contract is a type of swing option where the holder has the right to receive a given quantity of electricity within a specified period, at a fixed maximum effect (delivery rate). The contract is flexible, in the sense that delivery (the take hours) is called one day in advance. We investigate two simple strategies for exercising flexible load contracts, where both use price information from the forward market. For 10 contracts traded in the period 1997–2001, we calculate the performance of the two strategies and compare with the reported performance of one complex dynamic programming approach as well as the actual results obtained by three anonymous market participants. The comparison indicates that our simple computer‐efficient strategies perform better on average and produce more stable results. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
