Tribute to Endre Csáki and Pál Révész

Summary This article provides a glimpse of some of the highlights of the joint work of Endre Csáki and Pál Révész since 1979. The topics of this short exploration of the rich stochastic milieu of this inspiring collaboration revolve around Brownian motion, random walks and their long excursions, local times and additive functionals, iterated processes, almost sure local and global central limit theorems, integral functionals of geometric stochastic processes, favourite sites--favourite values and jump sizes for random walk and Brownian motion, random walking in a random scenery, and large void zones and occupation times for coalescing random walks.     

A new approach to obtain the non-Condon factors in closed form for two one-dimensional harmonic oscillators

A simple algebraic approach to calculate general Franck-Condon overlaps is extended to evaluate non-Condon factors for two one-dimensional harmonic oscillators. The method is based on the use of eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator annihilation operator which allows to obtain in terms of a multi-dimensional Hermite polynomial the overlap of harmonic oscillator functions associated with different Born-Oppenheimer potentials. The presented approach is self-contained, only basic concepts of quantum mechanics associated with the harmonic oscillator system are needed. The obtained expression for the Franck-Condon overlaps is similar to the Ansbacher’s formula and equivalent to the one calculated by Malkin and Man’ko. However our final expression has the advantages that only real numbers are involved and it is straightforward to get the limit case of equal frequencies. Concerning the non-Condon factors two approaches leading to different formulas are considered, both of which reduce to triple sums of products of three Hermite polynomials.     

Investigations of low- and high-spin states of <Superscript>132</Superscript>La

The fusion evaporation reaction ¹²²Sn(¹⁴N, 4n)¹³²La was used to populate the high-spin states of ¹³²La at the beam energy of 60 MeV. A new band consisting of mostly E2 transitions has been discovered. This band has the interesting links to the ground state 2^- and the isomeric state 6^-. A new transition of energy 351 keV connecting the low-spin states of the positive-parity band based on the πh _11/2 ⊗ νh _11/2 particle configuration, has been found. This has played a very important role in resolving the existing ambiguities and inconsistencies in the spin assignment of the band head. On removable even circuits in graphs

Let G be a connected graph with minimum degree at least 3. We prove that there exists an even circuit C in G such that G−E(C) is either connected or contains precisely two components one of which is isomorphic to a 1-bond. We further prove sufficient conditions for there to exist an even circuit C in a 2-connected simple graph G such that G−E(C) is 2-connected. As a consequence of this, we obtain sufficient conditions for there to exist an even circuit C in a 2-connected graph G for which G−E(C) is 2-connected.

Stability and Nonlinear Deformation of Cylindrical Grids

The general stability of single-layer cylindrical grids is studied in linear and nonlinear formulations. Dependence of the general buckling load on the geometry and stiffness parameters of a grid is established in an analytical form. Such grids are numerically analyzed for stability. It is established that the general buckling load is much less than the local buckling load. Typical general buckling modes are found. It is shown that such grids are weakly sensitive to imperfections

本文论述了分形介质的分形理论和数学基础,并简要综述了用分形理论和方法研究分形介质的传热与传质特性(如多孔介质的渗透率、热导率以及池核态沸腾换热)方面目前所取得的研究进展,最后扼要展望了用分形理论和方法进一步研究分形介质的传热与传质的可能的若干课题和方向。

本给出中国邮路问题的一个解法。虽然它仍只是初始方案，但因考虑了问题的足够信息，因而这种方案至少拉近了与最优解的距离。     

On the structure of the optimal server control for fluid networks

This paper derives the optimal trajectories in a general fluid network with server control. The stationary optimal policy in the complete state space is constructed. The optimal policy is constant on polyhedral convex cones. An algorithm is derived that computes these cones and the optimal policy. Eu- and Yb-induced reconstructions on a vicinal Si(1 0 0) surface

Early stages of rare-earth metal (Yb and Eu) growth on a vicinal, single-domain Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 surface have been studied in the coverage range of 0.1-0.3 monolayer (ML) by low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy. We show that Yb induces the 2 × 3 periodicity in the whole range of coverage studied. The 2 × 3 reconstruction coexists with the local 3 × 2/4 × 2 structure at about 0.2 ML of Yb. In contrast, Eu forms the 3 × 2 periodicity at 0.1-0.2 ML, whereas this structure is converted into the 2 × 3 phase at about 0.3 ML. The atomic arrangement and electronic properties of these reconstructions and the adsorbate-mediated modification of surface morphology are investigated.
