On the duration of the total eclipse of a satellite of a body

This paper solves the problem of the duration of the total eclipseof a satellite of a body, provided that (a) the body is sphericalin shape and the mass distribution inside the body is sphericallysymmetrical; (b) the satellite is a very small object; (c) thesatellite's orbit around a body is circular and the satellitecan pass through the centre of its shadow; (d) a source of lightis the source of the conical body's shadow (umbra) and it doesnot change its apparent position in the sky; (e) there are noperturbations on the satellite's orbit. The solution presentedrepresents the general discussion of the problem based on utilizationof some parts of the theory of contraction mappings.     

Generic replica symmetric field-theory for short range Ising spin glasses

Symmetry considerations and a direct, Hubbard-Stratonovich type, derivation are used to construct a replica field-theory relevant to the study of the spin glass transition of short range models in a magnetic field. A mean-field treatment reveals that two different types of transitions exist, whenever the replica number n is kept larger than zero. The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick critical point in zero magnetic field between the paramagnet and replica magnet (a replica symmetric phase with a nonzero spin glass order parameter) separates from the de Almeida-Thouless line, along which replica symmetry breaking occurs. We argue that for studying the de Almeida-Thouless transition around the upper critical dimension d = 6, it is necessary to use the generic cubic model with all the three bare masses and eight cubic couplings. The critical role n may play is also emphasized. To make perturbative calculations feasible, a new representation of the cubic interaction is introduced. To illustrate the method, we compute the masses in one-loop order. Some technical details and a list of vertex rules are presented to help future renormalisation-group calculations. TWO-POINT BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR A CLASS OF SECOND-ORDER DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS

In this paper, we apply a critical point theorem and obtain the condition for the existence of three solutions to two-point boundary value problem of a second order nonlinear difference equation.     

Large set of P3‐decompositions

Let G=(V(G),E(G)) be a graph. A (n,G, λ)‐GD is a partition of the edges of λK_n into subgraphs (G‐blocks), each of which is isomorphic to G. The (n,G,λ)‐GD is named as graph design for G or G‐decomposition. The large set of (n,G,λ)‐GD is denoted by (n,G,λ)‐LGD. 准晶体中八方晶系点群的对称性与矩阵表示

从理论上对准晶体中八方晶系各点群进行了研究.运用八方晶系各点群的极赤投影图,列出了各点群的所有对称操作;填出了固有点群822的群乘表.运用坐标变换和群论在自定义的八方坐标系中,推导出八方晶系点群所有对称操作的矩阵.这32个3×3矩阵的结构是相当简洁的,它们的矩阵元只有5种可能取值:0,±1,±2.其中2是反映八方晶系准晶体所具有的准周期性的特殊无理数.

Commuting and stable feedback design for switched linear systems

In the paper, commuting and stable feedback design for switched linear systems is investigated. This problem is formulated as to build up suitable state feedback controller for each subsystem such that the closed-loop systems are not only asymptotically stable but also commuting each other. A new concept, common admissible eigenvector set (CAES), is introduced to establish necessary/sufficient conditions for commuting and stable feedback controllers. For second-order systems, a necessary and sufficient condition is established. Moreover, a parametrization of the CAES is also obtained. The motivation comes from stabilization of switched linear systems which consist of a family of LTI systems and a switching law specifying the switching between them, where if all the subsystems are stable and commuting each other, then the total system is stable under arbitrary switching.     

On c‐Bhaskar Rao designs with block size 4

Several new families of c‐Bhaskar Rao designs with block size 4 are constructed. The necessary conditions for the existence of a c‐BRD (υ,4,λ) are that: (1)λ_min=?λ/3 ≤ c ≤ λ and (2a) c≡λ (mod 2), if υ > 4 or (2b) c≡ λ (mod 4), if υ = 4 or (2c) c≠ λ ? 2, if υ = 5. It is proved that these conditions are necessary, and are sufficient for most pairs of c and λ; in particular, they are sufficient whenever λ?c ≠ 2 for c > 0 and whenever c ? λ_min≠ 2 for c < 0. For c < 0, the necessary conditions are sufficient for υ> 101; for the classic Bhaskar Rao designs, i.e., c = 0, we show the necessary conditions are sufficient with the possible exception of 0‐BRD (υ,4,2)'s for υ≡ 4 (mod 6). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
