Thermal Analysis of the Conformational Disorder in SCLC Polymers with Rigid Backbone Glass transition studies

Bis [(ω-(4′-cyanobiphenyl)-4-yl)oxy-n-alkyl]norborn-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylate was polymerised via ring opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP). Two disubstituted polynorbornene derivatives both of cis configuration with different length of the side-chain were studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the effect of thermal history on the assignment of the glass transition event associated with the biaxial orientation of a smectic phase. Glass transition temperatures, the change of isobaric specific heats at T_g and the enthalpies of isotropisation were calculated. The DSC traces only show the classic step-wise change in T_g in some cases, giving the evidence that the amorphous domains are constrained and highly restricted in movement due to the morphology developed as a result of the biaxial stretching. Based on the literature data of mono- and disubstituted polynorbornene derivatives and our calorimetric experiments, the shape of T_g dependence on number of (CH₂) units is interpreted. Acoustic wavefront imaging

We introduce a new class of experiments which provide graphic insights into the propagation of acoustic waves in anisotropic media. Simply stated, we have devised a means of observing the expanding acoustic wavefront from a point disturbance in a solid. The data may be viewed as a movie or a series of snapshots. The observed wavefronts represent the group-velocity surfaces of acoustic waves, which reflect the basic elastic anisotropy of the solid. The technique has been applied to coherent acoustic waves with frequencies in the megahertz range (at ambient temperatures) and to incoherent heat pulses in the hundred-gigahertz range (at liquid-helium temperatures). In this article, we first provide a pedagogical introduction to wave propagation in elastically anisotropic media, reviewing some early methods for visualizing acoustic waves. Next, we describe the “acoustic wavefront imaging” method and give representative results in crystals and composite materials. Finally, we show how this method relates to recent advances in phonon imaging and internal diffraction of ultrasound.

Using the ligand pyridazine-3，6-dicarboxylate (H₂pzdc)， a coordination polymer [Cd₂(pzdc)₂(H₂O)₄] was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis， thermal analysis， IR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the tetragonal system with space group I4₁/a. The crystallographic data are: a=1.470 6(4) nm， c=1.489 8(6) nm， V=3.222 0(19) nm³， Z=16， μ=2.725 mm^-1， D_c=2.594 g·cm^-3， R₁=0.017 8， wR₂=0.044 6. In the complex， the cadmium(Ⅱ) ions with the eight-coordinated dodecahedral geometry are linked by the pzdc ligands to generate one-dimensional chains， which are associated into the three-dimensional architecture via O-H…O hydrogen bonding. A Cu(Ⅱ) complex [Cu(L)_1.5(OSO₃)]·3H₂O (1) [L=1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene] was synthesized by reaction of ligand L with CuSO₄·5H₂O using solvothermal method and its structure was determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The structure indicates that the complex crystallizes in triclinic, space group P1 with a=0.948 8(2), b=1.078 5(2), c=1.108 4(2) nm, α=74.820(2), β=81.331(2), γ=72.638(2)°, V=1.041 5(3) nm³, Z=2, D_calc=1.687 g·cm^-3, F(000)=544, μ=1.205 cm^-1, the final R=0.062 3 and wR=0.132 8. The Cu(Ⅱ) atom has distorted square-pyramidal environment with a N₃O₂ donor set.
