Zirconium-mediated conversion of homoallylic ethers into cyclopropane derivatives

Homoallylic ethers react with Cp₂ZrCl₂/2 n-BuLi reagent to afford cyclopropane derivatives. Cyclopropylcarbinyl-homoallyl rearrangements involving zirconium species are observed depending on the substrate structure.     

Analysis of compounds of environmental concern: II. Diphenyl ethers

Nineteen halogenated and/or nitrated diphenyl ethers (currently listed in EPA Method 8111) have been separated on a DB-5/ DB-1701 column pair connected to an inlet splitter and separate electron capture detectors. Retention times are included for 10 additional compounds evaluated for their suitability as internal standards or surrogate compounds for incorporation into Method 8111. Method reproducibility and linearity are discussed, and results are presented for extracts of two real samples spiked with the 19 diphenyl ethers and analyzed using the dual-column dual-detector arrangement.

Synthesis and structure of a dithioether-substituted butene-2-olide-4-ylidene-4 cobalt carbonyl complex

The complex (1) has been prepared and its structure determined. Complex1 is the first stable thioether derivative of a metal carbonyl containing only cobalt as metal. It crystallizes in the monoclinic P2₁/c space group, witha = 13.975( 4 ),b = 11.363( 3 ),c = 14.686(2)A, = 112.25(2)°,V = 2158.5(7)A³.Z = 4. The solution using direct methods and the anisotropic refinement of all nonhydrogen atoms led toR = 0.039,wR = 0.041 for 3296 reflections with F> 4.0(F) Analogous but less stable complexes are formed with 1,6-diphenyl-2,5-dithiahexane and the crown thioether 1,4,7-trithiacyclonane, the latter functioning either as a bidenlate or a tridentate ligand.     

Effect of solvent on the cation-sensitive fluorescence of polyanions bearing 4′-acryloylbenzo-18-crown-6 Units

Changes in the fluorescence intensity of polyanions bearing 4-acryloylbenzo-18-crown-6 units on the addition of cations were studied in a mixed solvent of methanol and water at 30°C. The sensitivity of the change in fluorescence intensities of the polymers toward cations was strongly enhanced compared to that of the corresponding model compound. When alkali metal cations were added, the fluorescence intensity of the polymers decreased in the orders Li⁺>Na⁺>Cs⁺>Rb⁺>K⁺ in a methanol-water (19) mixture and Li⁺>Na⁺>Rb⁺>K⁺Cs⁺ in a methanol-water (91) mixture. Alkaline earth metal cations and alkylamine hydrochlorides decreased the fluorescence intensity of the polymers in a methanol-water (19) mixture. The cation-dependent decrease in the fluorescence intensity of the polymers was affected by the water fraction in a mixed solvent of methanol and water.     

Radiation grafting from binary monomer mixtures. I. Vinyl ether of monoethanolamine and vinyl ether of ethyleneglycol

Gamma-radiation grafting of vinyl ether of monoethanolamine and vinyl ether of ethyleneglycol (VEEG) on polyethylene films has been studied from binary monomer mixtures. The effect of co-monomer composition and total exposure radiation dose on the grafting process is investigated. A combination of potentiometric and gravimetric techniques is applied to determine the grafting degree of each monomer in the final graft copolymer. The presence of more active monomer VEEG in the mixture was found to enhance the grafting of both monomers because the increasing of copolymerization rate which in turn increases the total grafting degree. The modification of the hydrophilic properties of the graft copolymer is studied by examining the grafted films for water- and copper (II) ions uptake.

Macrocycle opening in crown ethers

Macrocycle opening in derivatives of benzocrown ethers under the action of amines is affected by the nature of the heteroatoms in the macrocycle, the nature of the functional group in the benzene ring of the crown ether, and the length, branching, and number of hydrocarbon radicals at the amine nitrogen atom.
