The present study investigates the electromagnetic braking of buoyancy convective flows occurring in differentially heated cavities, filled with low Prandtl, dilute, incompressible and electrically conducting alloys, and subjected to a constant horizontal temperature gradient. In practice, such flows known as ‘Hadley circulation’ are relevant in material processing technologies, such as the horizontal Bridgman configuration. A collocation spectral numerical method is developed to solve the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations, modelling the flow phenomena occurring in such configurations, using a vorticity–stream function formulation. The two components of the velocity are deduced from the stream function and the temperature distribution is obtained through the resolution of the energy conservation equation. The results in terms of velocity and temperature distributions for a given Grashof number are obtained for various Hartmann numbers and show that as the Hartmann number increases, the electromagnetic braking of the flow is observed. Moreover, the results illustrate the changes affecting the flow structure which becomes quasi-parallel in the core region of the cavity for sufficiently high values of Ha and the onset of the Hartmann and parallel layers along the boundaries. Also, with increasing Ha, the isotherms are less affected by the convective flow and become parallel to the vertical walls indicating that heat transfer is mainly achieved by conduction.  相似文献

The linear stability of convection due to compositional and thermal buoyancy in Earth's outer core has been investigated. We have obtained the values of Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation points by plotting graphs of neutral curves corresponding to stationary and oscillatory convection for different values of physical parameters. We have derived a non-linear two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg equation with real coefficients near the onset of stationary convection at a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation and two non-linear one-dimensional coupled Landau-Ginzburg type equations with complex coefficients near the onset of oscillatory convection at a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. We have studied Nusselt number contribution from a Landau-Ginzburg equation at the onset of stationary convection. We have discussed the stability regions of standing and travelling waves. We have also discussed the occurrence of secondary instabilities such as Eckhaus, zigzag and Benjamin-Feir instabilities. We have also derived the non-linear amplitude equation near the Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation point.  相似文献

Sedimenting colloidal particles may feel a surprisingly strong buoyancy in a mixture with other particles of a considerably larger size. In this paper we investigated the buoyancy of colloidal particles in a concentrated binary suspension in situ in a centrifugal field. After dispersing two different fluorescence-labeled silica nanoparticles with a large size ratio (90 nm and 30 nm, size ratio: 3) in a refractive index matching solvent, we used a multi-wavelength analytical ultracentrifuge to measure the concentration gradients of both particles in situ. The concentration of the 90 nm silica nanoparticles was used to calculate the effective solvent density for the 30 nm silica nanoparticles. The exponential Boltzmann equation for the sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium with locally varying effective solvent density was then used to theoretically predict the concentration gradient of 30 nm silica nanoparticles, which describes the experimental results very well. This finding proves the validity of effective buoyancy in colloidal mixtures and provides a good model to study sedimenting polydisperse colloids.  相似文献

The disturbance field created by a neutrally buoyant sphere, suspended in a boundary layer past a plate is investigated. The analysis shows that for particles with radiiR p<(L/Re i 5/4 ) (Rei is the total Reynolds number of the background flow-stream), the disturbance is dominated by the viscous transverse interactions. Longitudinal viscous and convective terms appear in higher approximations with regard to dimensionless complexes, comprising the particle's radius, the boundary-layer thickness, and the length of the plate. These effects are just corrections to the basic viscous disturbance field.  相似文献

为研究自然对流流动和换热的实质,对重力场中自然对流的驱动力进行了进一步分析,提出了自然对流产生的充分必要条件。以二维封闭方腔内空气自然对流为对象,分别对三种不同的自然对流形式进行了数值模拟。结果表明:只要流体所受体积力为非保守力,即可产生自然对流。这为自然对流的控制提供了一定的理论依据。  相似文献

Methods for calculating buoyancy forces in multicomponent electrochemical systems using relative ion mass coefficients are analyzed. An approximate method for determining ion mass coefficients using the available reference data on the concentration dependences of densities of individual substance solutions is developed. Ionic mass coefficients, found using this method, are tabulated. These can be used for determining buoyancy forces in electrochemical systems of various compositions.  相似文献

We investigate the sedimentation properties of quasi-neutrally buoyant inertial particles carried by incompressible zero-mean fluid flows. We obtain generic formulae for the terminal velocity in generic space-and-time periodic (or steady) flows, along with further information for flows endowed with some degree of spatial symmetry such as odd parity in the vertical direction. These expressions consist in space-time integrals of auxiliary quantities that satisfy partial differential equations of the advection–diffusion–reaction type, which can be solved at least numerically, since our scheme implies a huge reduction of the problem dimensionality from the full phase space to the classical physical space.  相似文献
