Intuitionistic notions of boundedness in ℕ

We consider notions of boundedness of subsets of the natural numbers ? that occur when doing mathematics in the context of intuitionistic logic. We obtain a new characterization of the notion of a pseudobounded subset and we formulate the closely related notion of a detachably finite subset. We establish metric equivalents for a subset of ? to be detachably finite and to satisfy the ascending chain condition. Following Ishihara, we spell out the relationship between detachable finiteness and sequential continuity. Most of the results do not require countable choice. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Geometric Condition Measures and Smoothness Condition Measures for Closed Convex Sets and Linear Regularity of Infinitely Many Closed Convex Sets

In this paper, we study geometric condition measures and smoothness condition measures of closed convex sets, bounded linear regularity, and linear regularity. We show that, under certain conditions, the constant for the linear regularity of infinitely many closed convex sets can be characterized by the geometric condition measure of the intersection or by the smoothness condition measure of the intersection. We study also the bounded linear regularity and present some interesting properties of the general linear regularity problem.The author is grateful to the referees for valuable and constructive suggestions. Characterization of standard embeddings between complex Grassmannians by means of varieties of minimal rational tangents

In 1993,Tsal proved that a proper holomorphic mapping f:Ω→Ω' from an irreducible bounded symmetric domainΩof rank≥2 into a bounded symmetric domainΩ' is necessarily totally geodesic provided that r':=rank(Ω')≤rank(Ω):= r,proving a conjecture of the author's motivated by Hermitian metric rigidity.As a first step in the proof,Tsai showed that df preserves almost everywhere the set of tangent vectors of rank 1.Identifying bounded symmetric domains as open subsets of their compact duals by means of the Borel embedding,this means that the germ of f at a general point preserves the varieties of minimal rational tangents(VMRTs). In another completely different direction Hwang-Mok established with very few exceptions the Cartan- Fubini extension priniciple for germs of local biholomorphisms between Fano manifolds of Picard num- ber 1,showing that the germ of map extends to a global biholomorphism provided that it preserves VMRTs.We propose to isolate the problem of characterization of special holomorphic embeddings between Fano manifolds of Picard number 1,especially in the case of classical manifolds such as ratio- nal homogeneous spaces of Picard number 1,by a non-equidimensional analogue of the Cartan-Fubini extension principle.As an illustration we show along this line that standard embeddings between com- plex Grassmann manifolds of rank≤2 can be characterized by the VMRT-preserving property and a non-degeneracy condition,giving a new proof of a result of Neretin's which on the one hand paves the way for far-reaching generalizations to the context of rational homogeneous spaces and more generally Fano manifolds of Picard number 1,on the other hand should be applicable to the study of proper holomorphic mappings between bounded domains carrying some form of geometric structures.     

A Criterion for the Second Real Continuous Bounded Cohomology of a Locally Compact Group to be Finite-Dimensional

We present a brief review of the theory of quasi-characters and quasi-representations and prove a necessary and sufficient condition that the second real continuous bounded cohomology of a locally compact group to be finite-dimensional. This criterion is established by using the properties of continuous pseudocharacters on a locally compact group.     

A continuity theorem for Stinespring's dilation

We show a continuity theorem for Stinespring's dilation: two completely positive maps between arbitrary C^∗-algebras are close in cb-norm if and only if we can find corresponding dilations that are close in operator norm. The proof establishes the equivalence of the cb-norm distance and the Bures distance for completely positive maps. We briefly discuss applications to quantum information theory.

Conservation principles of the geophysical fluid dynamics for bounded basins

Summary The paper shows how a variety of quasi-geostrophic equations can be developed to obtain, in the oceanographic case, conservation principles consistently referred to bounded basins. Some unsatisfactory examples found in the literature are critically revisited.

The play operator on the rectifiable curves in a Hilbert space

The vector play operator is the solution operator of a class of evolution variational inequalities arising in continuum mechanics. For regular data, the existence of solutions is easily obtained from general results on maximal monotone operators. If the datum is a continuous function of bounded variation, then the existence of a weak solution is usually proved by means of a time discretization procedure. In this paper we give a short proof of the existence of the play operator on rectifiable curves making use of basic facts of measure theory.
