A $\Gamma$-convergence result for doubling metric measures and associated perimeters

Abstract. In this paper we study the notion of perimeter associated with doubling metric measures or strongly weights. We prove that the metric perimeter in the sense of L. Ambrosio and M. Miranda jr. coincides with the metric Minkowski content and can be obtained also as a -limit of Modica-Mortola type degenerate integral functionals. Finite-Dimensional Approximations for Scattering Theory Operators in the Wave-Packet Representation

We consider some types of packet discretization for continuous spectra in quantum scattering problems. As we previously showed, this discretization leads to a convenient finite-dimensional (i.e., matrix) approximation for integral operators in the scattering theory and allows reducing the solution of singular integral equations connected with the scattering theory to some suitable purely algebraic equations on an analytic basis. All singularities are explicitly singled out. Our primary emphasis is on realizing the method practically.     

Toda Chains in the Jacobi Method

We use the Jacobi method to construct various integrable systems, such as the Stäckel systems and Toda chains, related to various root systems. We find canonical transformations that relate integrals of motion for the generalized open Toda chains of types B _n, C _n, and D _n.     

The Hopf Property for Subgroups of Hyperbolic Groups

A group is said to be Hopfian if every surjective endomorphism of the group is injective. We show that finitely generated subgroups of torsion-free hyperbolic groups are Hopfian. Our proof generalizes a theorem of Sela (Topology 35 (2) 1999, 301–321).     

Likelihood and conditional likelihood inference for generalized additive mixed models for clustered data

Lin and Zhang (J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 61 (1999) 381) proposed the generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) as a framework for analysis of correlated data, where normally distributed random effects are used to account for correlation in the data, and proposed to use double penalized quasi-likelihood (DPQL) to estimate the nonparametric functions in the model and marginal likelihood to estimate the smoothing parameters and variance components simultaneously. However, the normal distributional assumption for the random effects may not be realistic in many applications, and it is unclear how violation of this assumption affects ensuing inferences for GAMMs. For a particular class of GAMMs, we propose a conditional estimation procedure built on a conditional likelihood for the response given a sufficient statistic for the random effect, treating the random effect as a nuisance parameter, which thus should be robust to its distribution. In extensive simulation studies, we assess performance of this estimator under a range of conditions and use it as a basis for comparison to DPQL to evaluate the impact of violation of the normality assumption. The procedure is illustrated with application to data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS).     

Upper and lower bounds for the energy of bipartite graphs

Using Lagrange's multiplier rule, we find upper and lower bounds of the energy of a bipartite graph G, in terms of the number of vertices, edges and the spectral moment of fourth order. Moreover, the upper bound is attained in a graph G if and only if G is the graph of a symmetric balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). Also, we determine the graphs for which the lower bound is sharp.     

Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis transitions of partially and fully substituted cellulose fatty esters

The main transitions of cellulose fatty esters with different degrees of substitution (DSs) were investigated with dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Two distinct main relaxations were observed in partially substituted cellulose esters (PSCEs). They were attributed to the glass‐transition temperature and to the chain local motion of the aliphatic substituents. The temperatures of both transitions decreased when DS or the number of carbon atoms (n) of the acyl substituent increased. Conversely, all the transitions of fully substituted cellulose esters occurred within a narrow temperature range, and they did not vary significantly with n. This phenomenon was explained by the formation of a crystalline phase of the fatty substituents. The presence of few residual OH groups in PSCEs was responsible for a large increase in the storage bending modulus, and it eliminated the effect of n on damping. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dimethylamino-substituted 7H-Benzo[de]pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoquinolin-7-ones and Their Behavior under Vilsmeier-Haack Conditions

The behavior of dimethylamino-substituted 7H-benzo[de]pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoquinoline-7-ones, synthesized for the first time, under conditions of the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. It has been shown that, on heating with POCl₃ and DMF, they are converted by electrophilic substitution at the position ortho to the dimethylamino group, followed by cyclization of the iminium adduct to a quinazolinium salt. When an acetyl group is present, the Arnold reaction, leading to the formation of a chloroaryl, accompanies the heterocyclization. The rates and proportion of the reaction products depend on the position of the dimethyl groups relative to the pyrazole ring.
