The dynamics of water in small volumes probed by incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering

Summary The dynamics of water molecules occupying very small volumes can be probed by incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering. We summarise some results obtained with wet samples of porous silica and hydrated proteins. The movements of the molecules in the vicinity of the substrate are extremely reduced as compared to those of bulk water at the same temperature. Almost only rotational movements subsist and the local diffusion is of the order of that observed in deeply supercooled water. Spatial decay in a double diffusive convection problem in Darcy flow

This paper deals with a model of time-dependent double diffusive convection in Darcy flow. In particular it is concerned with the spatial decay of solutions when the flow is confined to a semi-infinite cylinder. Decay bounds for an energy expression are derived.

Linearisation and potential symmetries of certain systems of diffusion equations

We consider systems of two pure one-dimensional diffusion equations that have considerable interest in Soil Science and Mathematical Biology. We construct non-local symmetries for these systems. These are determined by expressing the equations in a partially and wholly conserved form, and then by performing a potential symmetry analysis on those systems that can be linearised. We give several examples of such systems, and in a specific case we show how linearising and hodograph-type mappings can lead to new solutions of the diffusion system.

The Nature of Electronic Charge

Advances in gauge theories and unified theories have not thrown light on the meaning of electron. The problem of the origin of electronic charge is made precise, new insights gained from Weyl space are summarized, and the origin of charge in terms of fractional spin is suggested. A new perspective on the abelian Chern-Simons theory is presented to explain charge.

Atomistic packing models for experimentally investigated swelling states induced by CO2 in glassy polysulfone and poly(ether sulfone)

Atomistic packing models have been created, which help to better understand the experimentally observed swelling behavior of glassy polysulfone and poly (ether sulfone), under CO₂ gas pressures up to 50 bar at 308 K. The experimental characterization includes the measurement of the time‐dependent volume dilation of the polymer samples after a pressure step and the determination of the corresponding gas concentrations by gravimetric gas‐sorption measurements. The models obtained by force‐field‐based molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods allow a detailed atomistic analysis of representative swelling states of polymer/gas systems, with respect to the dilation of the matrix. Also, changes of free volume distribution and backbone mobility are accessible. The behavior of gas molecules in unswollen and swollen polymer matrices is characterized in terms of sorption, diffusion, and plasticization. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
