Invariants of Characteristics of Some Systems of Partial Differential Equations

We introduce the notion of an invariant of characteristics for a system of first-order partial differential equations. We prove that the existence of invariants is connected with passiveness of some systems. We describe a few methods for construction of new invariants from those already known. We give a scheme for application of the invariants to reduction and integration of systems of partial differential equations. As an application we consider the equation of gas dynamics.     

WKB Wave Function of the General Time-Dependent Quadratic Hamiltonian System

We derived the WKB wave function for the general time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian system using a unitary transformation method. We applied our research to sinusodially drived Caldirola–Kanai oscillator and confirmed that the time evolution of our approximated WKB wave function is similar to that of the exact one. This wave function can be used to analyze the interference between the probability amplitudes contributed by the area of overlap in phase space of quantum states.

Probability Inequalities and Limit Theorems for Generalized L-Statistics

We obtain exponential upper bounds for tails of distributions of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from an exponential distribution. We prove the asymptotic normality of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from the uniform distribution on [0,1] and of L-statistics with decomposed kernels (without any restrictions on the sample distribution type).     

Laguerre approximation of stable manifolds with application to connecting orbits

We present an algorithm, based on approximation by Laguerre polynomials, for computing a point on the stable manifold of a stationary solution of an autonomous system. A superconvergence phenomenon means that the accuracy of our results is much higher than the usual spectral accuracy. Both the theory and the implementation of the method are considered. Finally, as an application of the algorithm, we describe a fully spectral approximation of homo- and heteroclinic orbits.

     

Krylov subspaces and the analytic grade

Typical behaviour of the solution of a linear system of equations obtained iteratively by Krylov methods can be characterized by three stages. Initially the residual diminishes steadily; this is followed by stagnation and finally rapid convergence near the algebraic grade. This study examines this behaviour in terms of the concepts of approximately invariant subspace and what we have called the analytic grade of a Krylov sequence. It is shown how the small Ritz values play a vital role in the convergence and how this knowledge helps in the construction of an effective preconditioner. Prederivations of Lie Algebras and Isometries of Bi-invariant Lie Group

Lie groups with bi-invariant semi-Riemannian metrics are considered. We study the decomposition of the algebra of prederivations of a direct sum of Lie algebras and derive some results on the isotropy group of a bi-invariant product Lie group. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure that all isometries of a complex Lie group, endowed with a bi-invariant Norden metric, are holomorphic.
