Numerical study of homogeneous dynamo based on experimental von Kármán type flows

A numerical study of the magnetic induction equation has been performed on von Kármán type flows. These flows are generated by two co-axial counter-rotating propellers in cylindrical containers. Such devices are currently used in the von Kármán sodium (VKS) experiment designed to study dynamo action in an unconstrained flow. The mean velocity fields have been measured for different configurations and are introduced in a periodic cylindrical kinematic dynamo code. Depending on the driving configuration, on the poloidal to toroidal flow ratio and on the conductivity of boundaries, some flows are observed to sustain growing magnetic fields for magnetic Reynolds numbers accessible to a sodium experiment. The response of the flow to an external magnetic field has also been studied: The results are in excellent agreement with experimental results in the single propeller case but can differ in the two propellers case.     

Spectral Properties of Hamiltonians of Charged Systems in a Homogeneous Magnetic Field: II. The Structure of the Pure Point Spectrum

We study the pure point spectrum of the energy operator H(P ) of a many-particle charged quantum system in a homogeneous magnetic field based on the results in our previous work under fixation of the sum P of the pseudomomentum components of the system. We prove that the discrete spectrum H(P ) of a short-range system is infinite under some conditions (which, for example, hold for a system of two oppositely charged particles) even in the case of a finitely supported potential. For a long-range system of the type of a (+)-ion of an atom (including the ion), the discrete spectrum is infinite.     

Characterizations of Bochner–Krall Orthogonal Polynomials of Jacobi Type

Let $\{P_n(x) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ be an orthogonal polynomial system relative to a compactly supported measure. We find characterizations for $\{P_n(x) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ to be a Bochner--Krall orthogonal polynomial system, that is, $\{P_n(x) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ are polynomial eigenfunctions of a linear differential operator of finite order. In particular, we show that $\{P_n(x) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ must be generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal relative to a Jacobi weight plus two point masses.

Detecting Mass Points of Representing Measures

We discuss a possibility of deciding whether measures representing a moment sequence or realizing orthogonality of polynomials have atoms. This is done on the real line and in several variables.

Three point covers with bad reduction

We study Galois covers of the projective line branched at three points with bad reduction to characteristic , under the condition that strictly divides the order of the Galois group. As an application of our results, we prove that the field of moduli of such a cover is at most tamely ramified at .

     

Zeroes of complete polynomial vector fields

We prove that a complete polynomial vector field on has at most one zero, and analyze the possible cases of those with exactly one which is not of Poincaré-Dulac type. We also obtain the possible nonzero first jet singularities of the foliation at infinity and the nongenericity of completeness. Connections with the Jacobian Conjecture are established.

     

On the Bochner theorem on orthogonal operators

We prove the following theorem. Any isometric operator , that acts from the Hilbert space with nonnegative weight to the Hilbert space with nonnegative weight , allows for the integral representation

The Orders of Related Elements of a Finite Field

All finite fields q (q 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 13, 25, 121) contain a primitive element for which + 1/ is also primitive. All fields of square order q ² (q 3, 5) contain an element of order q + 1 for which + 1/ is a primitive element of the subfield q. These are unconditional versions of general asymptotic results.
