Stability and bifurcation analysis in the delay-coupled van der Pol oscillators

In this paper, the dynamics of a system of two van der Pol equations with a finite delay are investigated. We show that there exist the stability switches and a sequence of Hopf bifurcations occur at the zero equilibrium when the delay varies. Using the theory of normal form and the center manifold theorem, the explicit expression for determining the direction of the Hopf bifurcations and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are derived.     

An asymptotic Reissner–Mindlin plate model

A mathematical study via variational convergence of a periodic distribution of classical linearly elastic thin plates softly abutted together shows that it is not necessary to use a different continuum model nor to make constitutive symmetry hypothesis as starting points to deduce the Reissner–Mindlin plate model.     

Feedback control design for Rössler and Chen chaotic systems anti-synchronization

The proposed anti-synchronization conditions of coupled chaotic systems are based, in this Letter, on the use of aggregation techniques for the stability study of the error dynamics. The schemes are, successfully, applied to coupled Rössler and Chen chaotic systems making the instantaneous characteristic matrix under the arrow form. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.     

Speciation of zinc in secondary fly ashes of municipal solid waste at high temperatures

The evaporation aerosols produced during the vitrification process of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) fly ash represent a potential environmental risk owing to their high content of heavy metals. In this research, high‐temperature heating processes were carried out on fly ashes collected from bag houses in a Chinese MSWI plant and the secondary fly ashes (SFA) were separately collected at three high temperatures (1273 K, 1423 K and 1523 K) below the melting range. Elemental analysis showed that high contents of both zinc and chlorine were present in these SFA samples and, according to the standard of the heavy metals industrial grade of ore, SFAs can be re‐used as metallurgical raw materials or rich ore. Moreover, as shown by XAS analysis and for different high temperatures, zinc environments in the three SFA samples were characterized by the same local structure of the zinc chloride. As a consequence, a zinc recycling procedure can be easily designed based on the configuration information.     

Multi-moment advection scheme for Vlasov simulations

We present a new numerical scheme for solving the advection equation and its application to Vlasov simulations. The scheme treats not only point values of a profile but also its zeroth to second order piecewise moments as dependent variables, for better conservation of the information entropy. We have developed one-and two-dimensional schemes and show that they provide quite accurate solutions within reasonable usage of computational resources compared to other existing schemes. The two-dimensional scheme can accurately solve the solid body rotation problem of a gaussian profile for more than hundred rotation periods with little numerical diffusion. This is crucially important for Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasmas. Applications of the one- and two-dimensional schemes to electrostatic and electromagnetic Vlasov simulations are presented with some benchmark tests.     

Bond pricing under a Markovian regime-switching jump-augmented Vasicek model via stochastic flows

In this article, we shall explore the state of art of stochastic flows to derive an exponential affine form of the bond price when the short rate process is governed by a Markovian regime-switching jump-diffusion version of the Vasicek model. We provide the flexibility that the market parameters, including the mean-reversion level, the volatility rate and the intensity of the jump component switch over time according to a continuous-time, finite-state Markov chain. The states of the chain may be interpreted as different states of an economy or different stages of a business cycle. We shall provide a representation for the exponential affine form of the bond price in terms of fundamental matrix solutions of linear matrix differential equations.

It is known that a linear ordinary differential equation of order n3 can be transformed to the Laguerre–Forsyth form y ⁽ⁿ⁾= _i=3 ⁿ a _n–i (x)y ^(n–i) by a point transformation of variables. The classification of equations of this form in a neighborhood of a regular point up to a contact transformation is given.     

A theory of concordance for non-spherical 3-knots

Consider a closed connected oriented 3-manifold embedded in the -sphere, which is called a -knot in this paper. For two such knots, we say that their Seifert forms are spin concordant, if they are algebraically concordant with respect to a diffeomorphism between the 3-manifolds which preserves their spin structures. Then we show that two simple fibered 3-knots are geometrically concordant if and only if they have spin concordant Seifert forms, provided that they have torsion free first homology groups. Some related results are also obtained.
