Solventless injecction for packed column supercritical fluid chromatography

The adverse effects of injection solvent strength on microbore packed column SFC band broadening are demonstrated and a solventless injection system that eliminates these effects is introduced. The injection system removes solvent in a GC-like manner using a retention gap and an on-column capillary GC syringe. The analyte is delivered to the analytical column in a solvent-free plug of supercritical fluid mobile phase.     

Semi-micro solvent extraction as a rapid and efficient preconcentration technique for the determination of n-alkanes in oil-contaiminated water and soil samples by capillary gas chromatography

Summary In this study, a rapid and efficient semi-micro extraction procedure is presented for the extraction of some higher n-alkanes from water and soil samples. In the case of water samples n-hexane was used as the organic phase in a phase volume ratio (volume of aqueous phase/volume of organic phase) higher than 285, while in the case of soil samples, extraction with n-hexane was carried out in the presence of an excess of 2 M NaCl solution. The extraction rate from soil samples is very high and is better than Soxhlet extraction, comparable with supercritical fluid extraction. High preconcentration factor in water samples allows the limits of detection to be in the ng.mL⁻¹ level with the use of gas chromatographic analysis. Flame ionization detector was used for monitoring the analytes. The obtained recoveries of all studied compounds from both water and soil samples are higher than 90%. This method was successfully used to determine some n-alkanes in municipal wastewater and contaminated soil.     

Bismuth(III) nitrate pentahydrate—a mild and inexpensive reagent for synthesis of coumarins under mild conditions

Bismuth(III) nitrate pentahydrate is found to be an efficient catalyst for the Pechmann condensation reaction of phenols and β-ketoesters under solvent-free conditions. The reaction protocol is simple and is followed by aqueous work-up leading to the formation of the corresponding coumarin derivatives in good yield and high purity.     

Fast determination of evaporation enthalpies of solvents and binary mixtures using a microsilicon chip device with integrated thin film transducers

A silicon chip device with two types of integrated platinum thin film resistors was applied for microcaloric measurements. It was shown that the device is capable of fast characterization of liquid evaporation behaviour and allows the determination of evaporation enthalpies for pure liquids and mixtures. The applicability was demonstrated for a wide range of solvents from nonpolar aliphatic solvents over polar organics to protic solvents (e.g. iso-octane, toluene, acetone, ethanol, methanol and water). The sample volumes were in the range of about 2-5 μL. The determination of transient times, in case of constant power mode, or the power integral over time was used for the fast estimation of binary liquid mixtures. Thermo-resistive measurements of 5 μL droplets of solvent mixtures like methanol/iso-propanol, ethanol/water, iso-octane/iso-propanol and iso-octane/1,4-dioxane showed significant changes in temperature characteristics and evaporation enthalpies in dependence on composition. The applied heating power was about 1 W, which corresponds to measurement times between a few seconds and a minute.     

Solvent extraction of sodium picrate with 15-crown-5 into carbon tetrachloride. The determination of the dimer-formation constant of a crown ether-univalent metal salt 1∶1∶1 complex

The theory is derived to determine the dimer-formation constant,K ₂, of a crown ethermetal salt 111 complex in organic solvents of low dielectric constant by solvent extraction. The theoretical predictions are verified experimentally by extraction of sodium picrate (NaA) with 15-crown-5 (15C5) into carbon tetrachloride. All the experiments were conducted at 25°C. The logK ₂ value of the Na(15C5)A complex in carbon tetrachloride has been determined to be 4.05±0.11. Moreover, the partition constant of the complex is calculated.     

Classification of oxide glasses: A polarizability approach

A classification of binary oxide glasses has been proposed taking into account the values obtained on their refractive index-based oxide ion polarizability α_O2−(n₀), optical basicity Λ(n₀), metallization criterion M(n₀), interaction parameter A(n₀), and ion's effective charges as well as O1s and metal binding energies determined by XPS. Four groups of oxide glasses have been established: glasses formed by two glass-forming acidic oxides; glasses formed by glass-forming acidic oxide and modifier's basic oxide; glasses formed by glass-forming acidic and conditional glass-forming basic oxide; glasses formed by two basic oxides. The role of electronic ion polarizability in chemical bonding of oxide glasses has been also estimated. Good agreement has been found with the previous results concerning classification of simple oxides. The results obtained probably provide good basis for prediction of type of bonding in oxide glasses on the basis of refractive index as well as for prediction of new nonlinear optical materials.     

Evaluation of a PTV injector for quantitative analysis of volatile compounds at low concentrations

The performance of a PTV injector operated in the solvent venting mode with Tenax in the glass insert was evaluated with synthetic mixtures containing 5 to 50 ng of n-alkanes, ethyl esters, n-alcohols, and carboxylic acids. The influence of the sampled amount, the injected volume, and the nature of the solvent on accuracy and precision were studied. Coefficients of variation of relative (normalized) peak areas and absolute peak area ratios of each compound to the standard are of the order of 5 %.     

Polarographic study of Tl+, Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+ complexes with monensin anion in dipolar aprotic solvents

Summary The stability constants,K _sof monensin complexes with Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺ and Cs⁺ ions were studied by a competitive polarographic method using the Tl⁺/Tl(Hg) redox couple as a sensitive electrochemical probe. TheK _svalues are strongly influenced by the solvents (acetonitrile, propionitrile, acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide, N-methyl pyrolidinone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulfoxide, N,N-diethylformamide and N,N-diethylacetamide were used in experiments) and vary inversely with the Gutmann donicity scale. Molecular mechanics computations revealed the probable structures of the complexes.

Polarographische Untersuchung von Tl⁺-, Li⁺-, Na⁺- und Cs⁺-Komplexen mit Monesin-Anion in dipolaren aprotischen Lösungsmitteln

Zusammenfassung Es wurden die StabilitätskonstantenK _svon Monesin-Komplexen mit Li⁺-, Ma⁺- und Cs⁺-Ionen mittels einer competitiven polarographischen Methode unter Verwendung der Tl⁺/Tl(Hg)-Redoxelektrode als sensitiver elektrochemischer Sonde bestimmt. DieK _s-Werte werden stark vom Lösungsmittel (Acetonitril, Propionitril, Aceton, N,N-Dimethylformamid, N-Methylpyrrolidinon, N,N-Dimethylacetamid, Dimethylsulfoxid, N,N-Diethylformamid und N,N-Diethylacetamid) beeinflußt, wobei sie invers zurGutmann schen Donizitätsskala variieren. Die wahrscheinliche Struktur der Komplexe wurde mittels molekularmechanischer Berechnungen ermittelt.

     

Evaluation of the enantiomeric selectivity in the chiral ligand-exchange chromatography of amino acids by a computational model

The chromatographic resolution of enantiomeric amino acids is accomplished on a reversed phase column using aqueous mobile phase containing the chiral reagent N,N-dimethyl-S-phenylalanine-Cu(II). The separation is a result of the whole interaction between the diastereomeric complex surface and the mixed stationary phase realized by the dynamic coating of the RP-18 carbon chains layer. The elution order seems to be related to the different water coordination capability on copper ion in the formation of the mixed ternary complexes.     

Wet carbon-based solid acid/NaNO_3 as a mild and efficient reagent for nitration of aromatic compound under solvent free conditions

Nitro aromatic compound can be obtained in high yields via nitration of aromatic compound with wet carbon-based solid acid and NaNO_3 under solvent free oxidation at room temperature.
