The surface properties of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), which form the inner walls of blood vessels, have been studied by electro-osmosis measurements. The data are analyzed on the basis of an electrophoresis theory of “soft” particles (that is, particles covered by polyelectrolyte layers). This theory utilizes two parameters, i.e. the density of fixed charges in the cell surface layer and a “softness” parameter (1/λ) which corresponds to the reciprocal of the coefficient of the frictional forces exerted by the surface layer on the liquid flow in the surface layer. It is found that the “softness” parameter for HUVEC is very large, i.e. the surface of HUVEC is very soft compared with those of other biological cells such as erythrocytes or human promyelocytic leukemia cell lines (HL-60RG cells) which we have studied before. The obtained value of 1/λ is comparable to that observed for a poly (NIPAAm) hydrogel layer in a swollen state. The charge density in the surface layer of HUVEC, however, is found to be similar to those for other biological cells.  相似文献

In the case of 2D optical patterns, frustration comes from the interplay between the physical constraints (light-matter interaction) and the geometrical constraints (cavity length and structure). Depending on the dynamical parameters, we are able to single out two distinct behaviors. For small diffusion and close to threshold, the system is forced to fulfill the geometrical constraints giving rise to a phase dynamics of quasicrystals. For larger diffusion, the system fragmentates into spatial domains giving rise to a competition between different patterns. By means of a geometrical argument, we show that the spatial distribution of domains is related to the symmetry imposed by the geometrical constraint and that the domain borders are disinclination defects. These defects being the nucleation centers of spatial domains, they trigger the onset of pattern competition. Received 27 December 1999 and Received in final form 29 March 2000  相似文献

One missing component in the next generation optical communications link is an ultra-fast tunable filter. This is a crucial element in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems. Here, a novel fiber loop configuration is proposed, which operates as such a filter. The filter implementation is based upon currently available technologies. It is shown that with the suggested technique, optical selective elements can be generated with a tuning speed of a few nanoseconds. This is three orders of magnitude faster than other currently available filters. The filter can be designed as compact and is immunized to external instabilities. Using compound configurations, the filter can be designed with a very wide range of filter finesse and free spectral range.  相似文献

Summary The newly developed regulating valve is based on high-speed flow switching, and is capable of controlling the column outlet pressure independent of the mass flow-rate of the fluid. The reproducibility of retention times in pressure-programming elution on a 4.6 mm i.d. ×250mm long silica gel column was better than 1% with supercritical carbon dioxide as the mobile phase. The outlet mass flow-rate decreased while the pressure was increasing, keeping the input flow to the system constant; this was due to the compressibility of the fluid. The amount of decrease in the outlet flow was calculated by introducing an analogous circuit model and new parameters, instrumental and column capacitances. The result agreed with the measured value within 30% error.  相似文献

The possibility of all optical control of light deflection and displacement through a planar nonlinear waveguide has been discussed in this article. In this scheme a strong command beam controls the propagation characteristics of a weak signal beam in a nonlinear waveguide. Employing variational approach, we have established a set of coupled nonlinear equations for the displacement of the center of gravity, beam size, deflection angle, and beam divergence of the signal beam. These equations have been solved numerically to confirm the possibility of all optical control of deflection and displacement of a signal beam by a command beam.  相似文献

The switching time of an optically switched laser diode between a locked mode and free oscillation mode is studied. By starting with linear stability analysis, analytical expressions are developed to predict the switching time. It is shown that the switching of optical output between the locked and unlocked modes is governed by two relaxation processes with different time constants, and the change in the first relaxation process, dependent on the carrier density in the initial state, gives a strong effect on the total switching time, in contrast to the dynamic behavior of the carrier density dominated by a single relaxation process. Our analytical results show that larger detuning and power of optical input are effective in shortening the switching time and are believed useful to estimate the switching time of an optically switched bistable laser diode.  相似文献
