A hybrid Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) and standard finite element procedure is adopted to simulate ultrasonically generated waves traveling in an infinitely long steel pipe having an open, rectangular notch. Numerical illustrations indicate that dispersive guided waves can be used to locally detect and characterize such a notch. A frequency oriented approach is preferred because a problematic separation in time is circumvented when incident waves overlap their reflections from the nearby notch. The notch is discerned straightforwardly because distinctive singularities are introduced that differ from those observed at the modal cutoff frequencies in a Frequency Response Function (FRF) of a comparable but undamaged pipe. Its characterization is (suggested) demonstrated for a (non)axisymmetric notch by using several of the smallest differences in the frequencies at which the two set of singularities occur. Consequently an external stimulus that simultaneously excites more than one mode is beneficial.  相似文献

Plastics pipes made of polyethylene (PE) play an outstanding role in gas and water supply. While for modern pipe grades typical lifetimes of 50 years are taken for granted and service times of 100 years are discussed, pipes made of PE with a lower performance have been used for decades. As the repair and rehabilitation of existing pipe systems involve immense costs, the question of their qualitative condition has to be considered. In this paper, four different pipes used in the gas and water distribution in Austria with an age up to 30 years have been investigated. After a morphological and mechanical study, particular attention was paid to material stabilization, which is essential for long-term applications. Fracture mechanics tools have been used to gain information on the resistance to crack initiation and slow crack growth. Furthermore, a fracture mechanics extrapolation procedure has been applied to predict the remaining lifetime of the pipes. The results have indicated that all the pipes investigated are still in a very good condition and are likely to be sufficiently safe to remain in use.  相似文献

The flow of a third-grade fluid in a pipe with heat transfer is considered. Constant viscosity, Reynold's model viscosity and Vogel's model viscosity cases are treated separately. Approximate analytical solutions are presented for each case using perturbations. The criteria for which the solutions are valid are determined for the dimensionless parameters involved. The analytical solutions are contrasted with the finite difference solutions given in Massoudi and Christie (Int. J. Non-Linear Mech. 30 (1995) 687-699) and within admissible parameter range, a close match is achieved.  相似文献

A semi-analytical approach to obtain the proper orthogonal modes is described for the non-linear oscillation of a cantilevered pipe conveying fluid. Theoretically, while the spatial coherent structures are the eigenfunctions of the time-averaged spatial autocorrelation functions, it emerges that once the Galerkin projection of the proper orthogonal modes is carried out using the uniform cantilever-beam modes, the spatial dependency of the integral eigenvalue problem can be eliminated by analytical manipulation which avoids any spatial discretization error. As the solution of the integral equation is obtained semi-analytically by linearly projecting the proper orthogonal modes on the cantilever-beam modes, any linear or non-linear operation can be carried out analytically on the proper orthogonal modes. Furthermore, the reduced-order eigenvalue problem minimizes the numerical pollution which leads to spurious eigenvectors, as may arise in the case of a large-scale eigenvalue problem (without the Galerkin projection of the eigenvectors on the cantilever-beam modes). This methodology can conveniently be used to study the convergence of the numerically calculated proper orthogonal modes obtained from the full-scale eigenvalue problem.  相似文献

Start-up helical flows for Oldroyd-B and upper-convected Maxwell fluids are studied in straight pipes of circular and annular cross-section. The differential form of the constitutive equation leads to partial differential equations which are second-order in space and time. Apart from the condition that the fluid is initially at rest another initial condition is required to complete the solution process. By comparing results derived from the integral form of the constitutive equation we show that an appropriate initial condition may be found. Numerical results for start-up rotational flow in pipes of annular cross-section are presented.  相似文献

The aim of the study described in this paper is to investigate the two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) flutter of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid. Specifically, by means of a complete set of non-linear equations of motion, two questions are addressed: (i) whether for a system losing stability by either 2-D or 3-D flutter the motion remains of the same type as the flow velocity is increased substantially beyond the Hopf bifurcation precipitating the flutter; (ii) whether the bifurcational behaviour of a horizontal system and a vertical one (sufficiently long for gravity to have an important effect on the dynamics) are substantially similar. Stability maps and tables are used to delineate areas in a flow velocity versus mass parameter plane where 2-D or 3-D motions occur, and limit-cycle motions are illustrated by phase-plane plots, PSDs and cross-sectional diagrams showing whether the motion is circular (3-D) or planar (2-D).  相似文献

In-line flow segregators based on axial induction of swirling flow have important applications in chemical, process and petroleum production industries. In the later, the segregation of gas bubbles and/or water droplets dispersed into viscous oil by swirling pipe flow may be beneficial by either providing a pre-separation mechanism (bubble and/or drop coalescer) or, in the case of water-in-oil dispersions, by causing a water-lubricated flow pattern to establish in the pipe (friction reduction). Works addressing these applications are rare in the literature. In this paper, the features and capabilities of swirling pipe flow axially induced by a vane-type swirl generator were investigated both numerically and experimentally. The numerical analysis has been carried out using a commercial CFD package for axial Reynolds numbers less than 2000. Pressure drop, tangential and axial velocity components as well as swirl intensity along a 5 cm i.d. size and 3 m long pipe were computed. Single phase flow experiments have been performed using a water–glycerin solution of 54 mPa s viscosity and 1210 kg/m3 density as working fluid. The numerical predictions of the pressure drop were compared with the experimental data and agreement could be observed within the range of experimental conditions. The experiments confirmed that swirl flow leads to much higher friction factors compared with theoretical values for non-swirl (i.e. purely axial) flow. Furthermore, the addition of a conical trailing edge reduces vortex breakdown. Visualization of the two-phase swirling flow pattern was achieved by adding different amounts of air to the water–glycerin solution upstream the swirl generator.  相似文献

本文针对管件在输送压力流体时的特殊应力状态,提出了管材周向自增强的构想,据此设计出了自增强挤出系统.该系统利用芯棒旋转,使大分子链沿管周向取向并在适当的压力、温度条件下生成串晶结构,从而大大提高了管材的周向强度及模量.利用DSC、WAXD和SEM等检测手段对试件的凝聚态结构进行分析,找到了周向强度提高的理论依据.  相似文献
