A photoelastic study was conducted to examine the stress fields in the cutting process of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs). Force measurements were made and used in the analysis of the stress fields. Machined surfaces of workpieces with fibers oriented away from the cutting direction showed that the fibers were machined by shearing and tensile fracture; and when fibers were inclined towards the cutting tool, the fibers failed by shearing and bending. In addition, fiber-matrix debonding was observed to be maximum for fibers oriented at 45 deg towards the tool's path. In this paper an automated photoelastic method based on the phase stepping technique is described. It provides full-field
maps of the isoclinic parameter and the relative retardation. The technique is based on processing six images of a photoelastic
specimen acquired using plane and circularly polarized light. The number of acquisitions and the type of polariscope used
in this approach have been chosen with the aim at reducing the influence of quarter wave plate errors and obtaining raw photoelastic

We have adopted this concept to the axisymmetric problems and deduced some useful formulas for these cases. As a practical

The principal stress distribution over a section of a polyester model of a semi-infinite plate during the propagation of a
stress wave has been determined experimentally. The stress pulse was generated by the impact of a pendulum hammer. Two external
suitable trigger mechanism were used to trigger a double-pulse Ruby laser (0.5 Joule per pulse) at pre-determined intervals.
One surface of the model was made fully reflecting so that by means of reflective holo-interferometry of that surface and
reflective photoelasticity through the other surface of the model the isopachic and isochrometic fringe patterns were recorded

An integrated experimental and numerical investigation was conducted for removing the free-adge stress singularities in dissimilar
material joints. A convex inter-face/joint design, inspired by the shape and mechanics of trees, will result in reduced stress
singularities at bimaterial corners for most engineering material combinations.In situ photoelasticity experiments on convex polycarbonate-aluminum joints showed that the free-edge stress singularity was successfully
removed. As a result, the new design not only improves the static load transfer capacity of dissimilar meterial joints, but
also yields more reasonable interfacial tensile strength evaluation. For convex polycarbonate-aluminum and poly(methyl methacrylate)-aluminum
joint specimens, the ultimate tensile load increased up to 81% while the total material volume was reduced by at least 15%
over that of traditional butt-joint specimens with severe free-edge stress singularities. 相似文献
