Inelastic scattering on 12Be and disappearance of the N = 8 magic number

Experimental studies on in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a ¹²Be radioactive beam are presented. Inelastic scattering of the neutron-rich ¹²Be nucleus on ²⁰⁸Pb, ¹²C, and (CH₂)_n targets has been studied by measuring de-excitation γ-rays in coincidence with scattered particles. The level schemes and transition probabilities are determined for low-lying excited states in ¹²Be. The present paper presents a brief review of the spectroscopic results, which may be associated with the N = 8 shell quenching near the drip line. Minority opinion spreading in random geometry

The dynamics of spreading of the minority opinion in public debates (a reform proposal, a behavior change, a military retaliation) is studied using a diffusion reaction model. People move by discrete step on a landscape of random geometry shaped by social life (offices, houses, bars, and restaurants). A perfect world is considered with no advantage to the minority. A one person-one argument principle is applied to determine locally individual mind changes. In case of equality, a collective doubt is evoked which in turn favors the Status Quo. Starting from a large in favor of the proposal initial majority, repeated random size local discussions are found to drive the majority reversal along the minority hostile view. Total opinion refusal is completed within few days. Recent national collective issues are revisited. The model may apply to rumor and fear propagation. Received 23 January 2002

Surface coverage studies of the icosahedron by Li using density based molecular dynamics

Density based molecular dynamics has been used to investigate the ground state structures of heterogeneous binary clusters Al₁₃Li_n, n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 19, 20, 21. Some of these structures have also been investigated by full Kohn-Sham based calculations. Our earlier investigations have shown that in the Al-Li cluster, the ground state configurations are the ones where the Al atoms form a core around which the Li atoms form a “cage”. In the present work, we have chosen the well-known Al₁₃ icosahedron as the surface over which we study the evolution of the surface coverage as the number of Li atoms increases. On the basis of the earlier work, we expect that the Al₁₃Li₂₀ cluster would be the most stable and indeed our simulations do yield such a novel fivefold symmetric stable structure formed out of purely metal atoms. This icosahedral substrate is also used to study the coverage of the aluminum surface by lithium atoms. Measurement of the transverse kinetic energies of argon recoil ions produced in 120 MeV -Ar collisions

Measurements were carried out to deduce the transverse kinetic energies of highly charged argon recoil ions produced in single collisions of 120 MeV ions with argon atoms in which the post collision charge states of the projectiles were not determined. A time of flight spectrometer was designed and fabricated to detect the charge states of recoils. Experimental procedures for optimizing the spectrometer for extraction, transmission and detection of recoils are described. A simple approach for determining the transverse kinetic energy of the recoil ions from FWHM of the peaks is reported. This method is shown to be independent of the choice of collision partners and requires only the knowledge of the physical values of “optimized parameters” of time-of-flight spectrometer used in the experiment. The transverse kinetic energy of the recoil ions determined from the present approach is found to vary from 0.03 eV for to 4.02 eV for Ar¹⁰⁺. These values are compared with the results reported by earlier workers and are shown to follow a q²-behaviour up to a charge state q =8+ of the recoil ions. Low-energy spectrum and finite temperature properties of quantum rings

Recently it was demonstrated that the rotational and vibrational spectra of quantum rings containing few electrons can be described quantitatively by an effective spin-Hamiltonian combined with rigid center-of-mass rotation and internal vibrations of localized electrons. We use this model Hamiltonian to study the quantum rings at finite temperatures and in presence of a nonzero magnetic field. Total spin, angular momentum and pair correlation show similar phase diagram which can be understood with help of the rotational spectrum of the ring. Erbium incorporation in LiNbO3 by diffusion-doping

 The erbium incorporation into LiNbO₃ by diffusion doping is investigated in detail by means of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry, Rutherford Backscattering, Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray Standing Wave technique and optical site-selective spectroscopy. The diffusion of erbium in LiNbO₃ can be described by Fick’s laws of diffusion with a concentration-independent diffusion coefficient. The diffusion constants and activation energies for Z-cut (X-cut) LiNbO₃ are 4.8×10^-5 cm²/s (12.0×10^-5 cm²/s) and 2.28 eV (2.44 eV), respectively. A limited solubility of erbium in LiNbO₃ has to be taken into account increasing exponentially with rising temperature. During the first step of diffusion an Er _x Nb _y -oxide layer is formed at the surface of the sample acting as diffusion reservoir. Erbium is incorporated into LiNbO₃ on vacant Li-sites slightly shifted from the original Li-position along the (-c)-direction. Site-selective spectroscopy found four distinguishable energetically different erbium centres at this lattice site resulting from locally different symmetries of the crystal field. Production, isolation, and characterization of group-2 metal-containing endohedral metallofullerenes

80 , Ca/Sr/Ba@C₈₂, Ca/Sr/Ba@C₈₄) are investigated for the first time by UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution ¹³C NMR. Direct evidence of the endohedral nature and cage structures are revealed by these measurements. Furthermore, we have found that each metallofullerene has 2–4 structural isomers, which have been isolated by multistage high-performance liquid chromatography. These isomers have different cage structures and give characteristic UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra. Received: 22 September 1997/Accepted: 16 October 1997
