In this paper we show that for a given 3-manifold and a given Heegaard splitting there are finitely many preferred decomposing systems of 3g−3 disjoint essential disks. These are characterized by a combinatorial criterion which is a slight strengthening of Casson-Gordon's rectangle condition. This paper is concerned with the saddle-point problems arising from edge element discretizations of Maxwell's equations in a general three dimensional nonconvex polyhedral domain. A new augmented technique is first introduced to transform the problems into equivalent augmented saddle-point systems so that they can be solved by some existing preconditioned iterative methods. Then some substructuring preconditioners are proposed, with very simple coarse solvers, for the augmented saddle-point systems. With the preconditioners, the condition numbers of the preconditioned systems are nearly optimal; namely, they grow only as the logarithm of the ratio between the subdomain diameter and the finite element mesh size.

The oxidation of symmetrical disulfides [D ,L ‐cystine ( 1 ) and 3,3′‐dithiobis(propionic acid) ( 2 )] with hydrogen peroxide in D2O–NaOH solution (pH 10–11) was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Assignments of the proton and carbon NMR signals of starting materials ( 1 and 2 ) and products of oxidation are based on conventional 1D NMR methods (DEPT, selective spin decoupling). Formation of C—S bond cleavage products or, in case of 2 , partially oxidized intermediates was not detected. NH chemical shift temperature coefficients have been measured in a large series of N-substituted-3-piperidinethiopropionamides in which the NN distances are short but of varied length, as well as in a couple of the corresponding amides and in some simpler amides and thioamides. Geometries are calculated by means of ab initio DFT methods. The N-substituted-3-piperidinethiopropionamides show in most cases strong intramolecular N–HN hydrogen bonds according to IR spectra and ab initio calculations. For compounds with rather short NN distances the S=C–N–H moiety is non-planar. Dihedral angles as small as 160° are found. The NH chemical shift coefficients measured in non-polar solvents in all the N-substituted-3-piperidinethiopropionamides are more negative (−8 to −17 ppb/K) than in non-hydrogen bonded thioamides. For the latter in non-polar solvents like CDCl3 and toluene the temperature coefficients are as small as −1 to −4 ppb/K. The large negative effects can be related not only to the non-planarity of the thioamide group in a way that the more pronounced the non-planarity the more negative the temperature coefficients, but also to strong hydrogen bonding and the fact that the acceptor is a nitrogen. For similar amides with non-planar amide groups and nitrogen acceptor large negative temperature coefficients are likewise seen. In polar solvents like DMF the effects in simple thioamides are uniform and close to −6 ppb/K, whereas in the more complex compound like 4p(t) the temperature coefficient is close to 0. An essential feature of measuring temperature coefficients of compounds without strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds in non-polar solvents and at low temperatures is to keep the concentration low enough to avoid dimerisation. 相似文献

The synthesis is reported of copolymers of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and methacrylates containing 2,2′‐dihydroperfluorodecanoyl (RF) groups separated from the methacrylate by long polyethylene glycol (PEG) tether groups (between 1000 and 14,000 Da). At concentrations of between 1 and 8 wt % the copolymers with macromonomer contents of 1 mol % or less give gels in organic solvents such as dioxane, THF, or methanol, as well as in water. Given the low molecular weights, this indicates very efficient association of very low numbers of RF groups. Association and gel formation is enormously enhanced in the presence of longer PEG tethers. This is consistent with smaller poly(N,N,‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) intermolecular excluded volume effects that are mediated by the longer PEG tethers and possibly by the incompatibility of PEG and PDMA that may lead to the formation of PEG microdomains. This increases the local concentrations of the RF groups in the PEO domains that are not diluted by the PDMA chains, as would be the case in the absence of PEG tethers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
