Many problems in science and engineering involve significant physical entities and processes that span a substantial range of dimensions. In the case of characterization of bacteria on growth media using light scattering the length scales of interest can be classified as micro-scale (single bacterium), macro-scale (bacterial colonies of more than 1012 bacterium that have passed through the exponential growth phase and reached mm size), and the intermediate or meso-scale of several tens of hundreds of bacteria. Light scattering approaches, to be effective in determining physical properties such as morphology and material composition, must comprehend this spectrum of length scales. The discrete dipole approximation (DDA), a powerful modeling tool for rigorous 3-D vector scattering, has shown its capability to predict the light scattering from micro-scale objects. To be able to accommodate meso-scale objects, we need to extend the computational limits of the DDA method such that it could compute object sizes of 10λ-30λ characteristic dimension (i.e. volumes of 103-104 cubic wavelengths). To accomplish this, an analysis of the DDA method was performed for meso-scale cases of interest especially in biological applications. Based on this study, we propose new Sommerfeld integration paths and a revised iterative algorithm that combine to provide substantial improvements in the size of the computational domain that can be modeled for a given convergence criterion. 相似文献

Hierarchical structure in polymer‐based drug delivery systems as probed by calorimetric measurements

Thermoporosimetry (TPM), a differential scanning calorimetry technique that relies on the shift of transition temperatures caused by the confinement of liquids, was applied to elucidate the complex morphology of drug‐loaded polymeric microcapsules prepared by the emulsion solvent evaporation method. For the very first time, TPM has been applied simultaneously with two liquids as structural probes. It was found that Miglyol, which dissolves the selected drug (Ibuprofen), is confined inside vesicles having a mean radius of 26.3 nm, whereas water, which is the continuous phase, is trapped inside a swollen polymeric network of Eudragit with an average mesh radius of 1.7 nm. A proposed hierarchical structure is given, which predicts that Eudragit microcapsules are formed from a collection of inert oil vesicles partitioned by polymeric Eudragit membranes swollen by water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present paper presents a review of the main activities carried out within the context of the COMEDI research program, a joint collaboration involving three research teams focusing on the thermo-oxidation behaviour of composite materials at high temperatures.The scientific aim of the COMEDI research program was to better identify the link between the physical mechanisms involved in thermo-oxidation phenomena: oxygen reaction-diffusion, chemical shrinkage strain/stress, degradation at different scales and to provide tools for predicting the thermo-oxidation behaviour of composite materials under thermo-oxidative environments including damage onset.This aim was accomplished by investigating experimentally the thermo-oxidation behaviour of pure resin samples - both industrial and “model” materials - and by interpreting the results by a coupled reaction-diffusion-mechanics multiphysics model.A dedicated numerical model tool has been developed and implemented into the ABAQUS® finite element commercial software. This tool was employed to simulate the thermo-oxidative behaviour of a fibre-matrix microscopic representative composite cell.Finally, the model predictions for the composite have been validated by comparing the experimental and the simulated local matrix shrinkage displacements and the mass loss of composite specimens. 相似文献

An efficient and easy to implement method to generate Cartesian grids is presented. The presented method generates various kinds of Cartesian grids such as uniform, octree and embedded boundary grids. It supports the variation of grid size along each spatial direction as well as anisotropic and non‐graded refinements. The efficiency and ease of implementation are the main benefits of the presented method in contrast to the alternative methods. Regarding octree grid generation, applying a simple and efficient data compression method permits to store all grid levels without considerable memory overhead. The presented method generates octree grids up to a 13‐level refinement (81923 grids on the finest level) from a complicated geometry in a few minutes on the traditional desktop computers. Aiming to provide an appropriate number K of clusters, in this paper, we propose a new criterion function - H criterion function, whose three properties have also been proved. We validate the performance of the H criterion function on one artificial dataset and three real-world datasets, and the results are almostly consistent with a previous method. It is shown that the cortical brain network of the macaque displays a hierarchically clustered organization and the neuron network shows small-world properties. Now the two factors will be considered in our model and the dynamical behavior of the model will be studied.
