Remark on a lower diameter bound for compact shrinking Ricci solitons

In this paper, inspired by Fernández-López and García-Río [11], we shall give a new lower diameter bound for compact non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons depending on the range of the potential function, as well as on the range of the scalar curvature. Moreover, by using a universal lower diameter bound for compact non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons by Chu and Hu [7] and by Futaki, Li, and Li [13], we shall provide a new sufficient condition for four-dimensional compact non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons to satisfy the Hitchin–Thorpe inequality. Furthermore, we shall give a new lower diameter bound for compact self–shrinkers of the mean curvature flow depending on the norm of the mean curvature. We shall also prove a new gap theorem for compact self–shrinkers by showing a necessary and sufficient condition to have constant norm of the mean curvature.     

Measurements of saturated basic and acidic rock electrical conductivities at lower crustal temperatures and high pressures

Abstract

Laboratory measurements of the electrical conductivity of brine saturated acidic and metabasic rocks were done at confining pressures up to 0.2 GPa, high pore pressures and temperatures of 900°C. Acidic rocks showed conductivities insufficient to explain the lower crustal high conductivity layer. Basic rocks, however, showed conductivities consistent with the high conductivity layer at those temperatures that the layer is thought to possess.     

Lower and upper orientable strong radius and strong diameter of complete k-partite graphs

For two vertices u and v in a strong digraph D, the strong distance sd(u,v) between u and v is the minimum size (the number of arcs) of a strong sub-digraph of D containing u and v. For a vertex v of D, the strong eccentricity se(v) is the strong distance between v and a vertex farthest from v. The strong radius srad(D) (resp. strong diameter sdiam(D)) is the minimum (resp. maximum) strong eccentricity among the vertices of D. The lower (resp. upper) orientable strong radius srad(G) (resp. SRAD(G)) of a graph G is the minimum (resp. maximum) strong radius over all strong orientations of G. The lower (resp. upper) orientable strong diameter sdiam(G) (resp. SDIAM(G)) of a graph G is the minimum (resp. maximum) strong diameter over all strong orientations of G. In this paper, we determine the lower orientable strong radius and diameter of complete k-partite graphs, and give the upper orientable strong diameter and the bounds on the upper orientable strong radius of complete k-partite graphs. We also find an error about the lower orientable strong diameter of complete bipartite graph K_m,n given in [Y.-L. Lai, F.-H. Chiang, C.-H. Lin, T.-C. Yu, Strong distance of complete bipartite graphs, The 19th Workshop on Combinatorial Mathematics and Computation Theory, 2002, pp. 12-16], and give a rigorous proof of a revised conclusion about sdiam(K_m,n).

哈密顿系统的低维环面的保存性

本文给出了关于哈密顿系统低维环面的一个推广的KAM定理,它适用于同时存在法向频率和双曲法向分量的情况.其证明基于尤建功的一个定理的光滑性表述及法向双曲不变流形理论的应用.文中还给出了另外两种情况下的推广.     

Traveling wavefronts in diffusive and cooperative Lotka-Volterra system with delays

Existence of traveling wave front solutions is established for diffusive and cooperative Lotka-Volterra system with delays. The result is an extension of an existing result for delayed logistic scaler equation to systems, and is somewhat parallel to the existing result for diffusive and competitive Lotka-Volterra systems without delay. The approach used in this paper is the upper-lower solution technique and the monotone iteration recently developed by Wu and Zou (J. Dynam. Differential Equations 13 (2001) 651-687) for delayed reaction-diffusion systems without the so-called quasimonotonicity.     

Optimal lower bounds for cubature error on the sphere

We show that the worst-case cubature error E(Q_m;H^s) of an m-point cubature rule Q_m for functions in the unit ball of the Sobolev space H^s=H^s(S²),s>1, has the lower bound , where the constant c_s is independent of Q_m and m. This lower bound result is optimal, since we have established in previous work that there exist sequences of cubature rules for which with a constant independent of n. The method of proof is constructive: given the cubature rule Q_m, we construct explicitly a ‘bad’ function f_mH^s, which is a function for which Q_mf_m=0 and . The construction uses results about packings of spherical caps on the sphere.     

KKM property and fixed point theorems in metric spaces

In this paper, first part, we establish some fixed point theorems for a k-set contraction map on the nearly-subadmissible subsets of a complete metric space. The second part, we deduce a generalization of the approximate fixed point theorem for the lower semicontinuous mappings on a metric space.     

On the Lower Tail Probabilities of Some Random Sequences in <Emphasis Type="Italic">l</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis></Subscript>

We investigate the behaviour of the logarithmic small deviation probability of a sequence (σ _n θ _n ) in l _p , 0<p≤∞, where (θ _n ) are i.i.d. random variables and (σ _n ) is a decreasing sequence of positive numbers. In particular, the example σ _n ∼n ^−μ (1+log n)^−ν is studied thoroughly. Contrary to the existing results in the literature, the rate function and the small deviation constant are expressed expli- citly in the present treatment. The restrictions on the distribution of θ ₁ are kept to an absolute minimum. In particular, the usual variance assumption is removed. As an example, the results are applied to stable and Gamma-distributed random variables.
