Stereoselective synthesis of cis-p-menth-8-ene-1,7-diol, cis-p-menthane-1,7-diol, and cis-p-menthane-1,7,8-triol

The natural products cis-p-menthane-1,7-diol (cis-IV), cis-p-menth-8-ene-1,7-diol (cis-I) and cis-p-menthane-1,7,8-triol (cis-II) are obtained starting from the corresponding cis-cyanohydrins, cis-2 and cis-7, respectively, by chemical transformation of the cyano into the hydroxymethyl group. The key step of the synthesis is the very high cis-selectivity (> or = 96 %) of the MeHNL-catalyzed HCN addition to 4-alkylcyclohexanones. From 4-isopropylcyclohexanone (1) the cyanohydrin cis-2 and from 4-(1-methylvinyl)cyclohexanone (6) the cyanohydrin cis-7 result almost quantitatively. Regioselective hydroxylation of cis-I affords the triol cis-II. X-ray crystal structure determinations of the final products confirm their cis-configuration.

Synthesis of the first stable carborane containing simple enol

A carborane-containing stable simple enol — 1-2-isopropyl-o-carboran-I-yl)-1-phenyl2-mesityl-2-lrydroxyctlrylcne — has been synthesized. This enol does not isomerize to the starting ketone or keto-enol mixture even after prolonged heating in benzene in the presence of CF₃COOH.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Electrochemical synthesis of coatings in the system Ti-Si-B from molten salts

Powder and coatings of metal-like refractory compounds (MLRC) can be produced by electrochemical synthesis from molten salts. The stoichiometry of the deposited MLRC was found to correlate with the molar ratio of MLRC component ions in the melts. The system Ti-Si-B is of particular interest in terms of electrochemical synthesis since the titanium, silicon and boron potentials in the melt are close together. The electrochemical synthesis has been investigated in the system NaCl-KCl-NaF-K₂TiF₆-K₂SiF₆-KBF₄ at 700°C. The opportunity of deposition of new ternary compound in the system Ti-Si-B is shown by the electrochemical synthesis from molten salts.     

Spectral and Thermal Studies of Rare Earth Element 3-methylglutarates

Conditions for the formation of rare earth element (Y, La–Lu) 3-methylglutarates were studied and their quantitative composition and solubilities in water at 293 K were determined (10^–2 mol dm^–3). The IR spectra of the prepared complexes with general formula Ln₂(C₆H₈O₄)₃ nH₂O (n=3–8) were recorded and their thermal decomposition in the air were investigated. During heating the hydrated 3-methylglutarates are dehydrated in one step and next anhydrous complexes decompose to oxides Ln₂O₃ with intermediate formation Ln₂O₂CO₃ (Y, La, Nd–Gd) or directly to the oxides, Ln₂O₃, CeO₂, Pr₆O₁₁ and Tb₄O₇ (Ce, Pr, Tb–Lu). Organometallic Syntheses with Diazoalkanes

In recent years, aliphatic diazo compounds have proved to be more and more versatile as reagents in the preparative chemistry of organometallic complexes. As readily accessible compounds, they are not only suitable for the synthesis of known kinds of metal complexes but also open fresh routes to novel complex systems. The comparatively new field of diazoalkane complex chemistry exhibits numerous unexpected and novel reactions, and introduces interesting and promising aspects into the chemistry of carbonylmetal compounds.     

Total synthesis of dapiramicin B

The first total synthesis of dapiramicin B, a nucleoside antibiotic, is described. The characteristic N-glycoside linkage in dapiramicin B was effectively constructed by way of the Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction of a heptopyranosylamine with a bromopyrrolopyrimidine derivative.     

Total synthesis of (±)-cyclooroidin

The first total synthesis of (±)-cyclooroidin, a member of the pyrrole-imidazole alkaloid family recently isolated from the sponge Agelas oroides in optically pure form, is described. The synthesis was achieved in nine linear steps, with an overall yield of 10%. Key step was a Wolff bromoketone synthesis performed on the intermediate longamide B.     

Synthesis ofS-(+)-hydroprene

A novel path toS-(+)-hydroprene (1) starting from the technical gradeS-(+)-dihydromyrcene (2, e.e. 50%) is proposed. The latter was selectively transformed intoS-3,7-dimethyloctanal (5) in three steps including hydroalumination. The reactions of5 with allyl- or methallylmagnesium chloride followed, respectively, either by oxygenation in the presence of PdCl₂/CuCl or by ozonolysis, affordS,E-6,10-dimethyl-3-undecen-2-one (7) which was treated with ethoxyethynylmagnesium bromide to give the title juvenile hormone analogue in 23% overall yield.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk.
