Some properties of invariant polynomials with matrix arguments and their applications in econometrics

Summary Further properties are derived for a class of invariant polynomials with several matrix arguments which extend the zonal polynomials. Generalized Laguerre polynomials are defined, and used to obtain expansions of the sum of independent noncentral Wishart matrices and an associated generalized regression coefficient matrix. The latter includes thek-class estimator in econometrics.     

George Boole and the origins of invariant theory

Historians have repeatedly asserted that invariant theory was born in two papers of George Boole (1841 and 1842). Although several themes and techniques of 19th-century invariant theory are enunciated in this work, in reacting to it (and thereby founding the British school of invariant theory), Arthur Cayley shifted Boole's research program.

Restrictions of an invertible chaotic operator to its invariant subspaces

Let M$M$ be a closed subspace of a separable, infinite dimensional Hilbert space H$H$ with dim(H/M)=∞$dim(H/M)=\infty$. We show that a bounded linear operator A:M→M$A:M\to M$ has an invertible chaotic extension T:H→H$T:H\to H$ if and only if A$A$ is bounded below. Motivated by our result, we further show that A:M→M$A:M\to M$ has a chaotic Fredholm extension T:H→H$T:H\to H$ if and only if A$A$ is left semi-Fredholm.     

Relaxation of Nonlocal Singular Integrals

In this paper we study well-posedness of a class of nonconvex variational principles arising in regularization theory for denoising of data with sampling errors and level set regularization methods for inverse problems. These models result in minimization of nonconvex, singular functionals involving (possibly) non-local operators.

Application of an Extremization Method to a Linear Integral of a Statistical Decision Problem

We consider the variational inequality that represents the first-order optimality condition for the class of variational problems with the property that the integrand in the objective functional does not depend on the derivative of the unknown function. This allows the development of an iterative method for solving the statistical decision problem of testing simple hypotheses.     

Multilinear oscillatory integrals with Calderón-Zygmund kernel

Log-Polynomial Period Functions for Hecke Groups

In this article we shall determine the automorphic integrals of positive and negative integral weight associated with the full modular group and some Hecke groups. This will be done by using the Hecke Correspondence. We will also give a characterization of multiplier systems of real weight for Hecke groups.
