Generalized Wall Functions for Rough Walls Based on Data Assimilation

We present a systematic identification method for the development of equivalent boundary conditions for turbulent flow simulation over rough walls in engineering applications where the typical roughness involved is known for a given application. After parameterizing the roughness and sampling of the parameter space, numerical simulations or experiences are used to generate a database which is used to identify the coefficients of a polynomial reduced-order model. These laws are parameterized by an a priori length scale for which we propose a new a posteriori criterion.     

Boundary Integrals and Approximations of Harmonic Functions

Steklov expansions for a harmonic function on a rectangle are derived and studied with a view to determining an analog of the mean value theorem for harmonic functions. It is found that the value of a harmonic function at the center of a rectangle is well approximated by the mean value of the function on the boundary plus a very small number (often 3 or fewer) of specific further boundary integrals. These integrals are coefficients in the Steklov representation of the function. Similar approximations are found for the central values of solutions of Robin and Neumann boundary value problems. The results follow from analyses of the explicit expressions for the Steklov eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.     

A general form of Jordan-type double inequality for the generalized and normalized Bessel functions

In this note, a general form of Jordan-type double inequality involving the generalized and normalized Bessel functions is presented, and then some recent results concerning generalized and sharp work of Jordan’s inequality are extended. At the same time, the applications of the results above give two new infinite series for sinx/x and sinhx/x.     

Stress regularity in quasi-static perfect plasticity with a pressure dependent yield criterion

This work is devoted to establishing a regularity result for the stress tensor in quasi-static planar isotropic linearly elastic – perfectly plastic materials obeying a Drucker–Prager or Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion. Under suitable assumptions on the data, it is proved that the stress tensor has a spatial gradient that is locally squared integrable. As a corollary, the usual measure theoretical flow rule is expressed in a strong form using the quasi-continuous representative of the stress.

Combined phase I—phase II methods of feasible directions

This paper presents several new algorithms, generalizing feasible directions algorithms, for the nonlinear programming problem, min{f ⁰ (z) f ^j (z) 0,j = 1, 2, ,m}. These new algorithms do not require an initial feasible point. They automatically combine the operations of initialization (phase I) and optimization (phase II).Research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) Grant ENV76-04264 and the National Science Foundation Grant ENG73-08214-A01.     

Decreasing in transposition property of overlapping sums,and applications

In this paper a large class of multivariate densities and frequency functions, including the multivariate Poisson distribution and the compound multivariate Poisson distribution, are shown to have the decreasing in transposition property introduced by Hollander, Proschan, and Sethuraman (1977, Ann. Statist.5, 722–733). Sample applications in ecology and reliability are given; other applications to cumulation of damage and component down times are mentioned, but are not presented in detail.

Exact penalty functions and stability in locally Lipschitz programming

In this paper we extend the theory of exact penalty functions for nonlinear programs whose objective functions and equality and inequality constraints are locally Lipschitz; arbitrary simple constraints are also allowed. Assuming a weak stability condition, we show that for all sufficiently large penalty parameter values an isolated local minimum of the nonlinear program is also an isolated local minimum of the exact penalty function. A tight lower bound on the parameter value is provided when certain first order sufficiency conditions are satisfied. We apply these results to unify and extend some results for convex programming. Since several effective algorithms for solving nonlinear programs with differentiable functions rely on exact penalty functions, our results provide a framework for extending these algorithms to problems with locally Lipschitz functions.
