Quantification of the living human visual system using MRI methods has been challenging, but several applications demand a reliable and time-efficient data acquisition protocol. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of high-spatial-resolution diffusion tensor fiber tractography (DTT) in reconstructing and quantifying the human visual pathways. Five healthy males, age range 24–37 years, were studied after approval of the institutional review board (IRB) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data with 1-mm slice thickness on a 3.0-Tesla clinical MRI scanner and analyzed the data using DTT with the fiber assignment by continuous tractography (FACT) algorithm. By utilizing the high-spatial-resolution DTI protocol with FACT algorithm, we were able to reconstruct and quantify bilateral optic pathways including the optic chiasm, optic tract, optic radiations free of contamination from neighboring white matter tracts. 相似文献

q-Space diffusion MRI (QSI) provides a means of obtaining microstructural information about porous materials and neuronal tissues from diffusion data. However, the accuracy of this structural information depends on experimental parameters used to collect the MR data. q-Space diffusion MR performed on clinical scanners is generally collected with relatively long diffusion gradient pulses, in which the gradient pulse duration, δ, is comparable to the diffusion time, Δ. In this study, we used phantoms, consisting of ensembles of microtubes, and mathematical models to assess the effect of the ratio of the diffusion time and the duration of the diffusion pulse gradient, i.e., Δ/δ, on the MR signal attenuation vs. q, and on the measured structural information extracted therefrom. We found that for Δ/δ 1, the diffraction pattern obtained from q-space MR data are shallower than when the short gradient pulse (SGP) approximation is satisfied. For long δ the estimated compartment size is, as expected, smaller than the real size. Interestingly, for Δ/δ 1 the diffraction peaks are shifted to even higher q-values, even when δ is kept constant, giving the impression that the restricted compartments are even smaller than they are. When phantoms composed of microtubes of different diameters are used, it is more difficult to estimate the diameter distribution in this regime. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and simulations that explicitly account for the use of long duration gradient pulses. Using such experimental data and this mathematical framework, one can estimate the true compartment dimensions when long and finite gradient pulses are used even when Δ/δ 1. 相似文献

The purpose of this work was to compare diagnostic accuracy of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE MRI) and their combination in diagnosing prostate cancer. Twenty-five patients with clinical suspicion of prostate cancer underwent MRI, prior to transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies. MRI data were correlated to biopsy results. Logistic regression models were constructed for the DTI parameters, DCE MRI parameters, and their combination. The areas under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUC) were compared between the models. The nonparametric Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for statistical analysis. The sensitivity and specificity values were respectively 81% (74–87%) and 85% (79–90%) for DTI and 63% (55–70%) and 90% (85–94%) for DCE. The combination “DTI or DCE MRI” had 100% (97–100%) sensitivity and 77% (69–83%) specificity, while “DTI and DCE MRI” had 44% (37–52%) sensitivity and 98% (94–100%) specificity. The AUC for DTI+DCE parameters was significantly higher than that for either DTI (0.96 vs. 0.92, P=.0143) or DCE MRI parameters (0.96 vs. 0.87, P=.00187) alone. In conclusion, the combination of DTI and DCE MRI has significantly better accuracy in prostate cancer diagnosis than either technique alone. 相似文献

In this work we present a method for determining the optical parameters of turbid media, namely its absorption coefficient (μa) and its reduced scattering coefficient . It is based on the measurement of CW transmittance profiles and analysis of the experimental data by a theoretical model based on the diffusion approximation (DA) of the radiative transfer equation (RTE). The method developed has been investigated with solid polymer probes but it could be applied for liquid materials as well. Experimental results are presented and compared to those of other authors together with a discussion about the accuracy of measurements. In addition, measurements using integrating spheres as well as Monte Carlo simulations are also presented to validate these results. 相似文献

Up-conversion luminescence have been studied on Yb3+-Er3+ co-doped fluoride samples. Two infrared lasers with wavelength of 930 nm and 858 nm are carefully chosen as excitation sources. The experimental results suggest direct cooperation sensitization up-conversion rather than two-step sensitization up-conversion is responsible for the increased population of 2H11/2 (Er3+) and thus the increased green emission in the region 514~574 nm in Yb3+-Er3+ co-doped system. 相似文献

Several methods have been proposed for motion correction of high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) data. There have been few comparisons of these methods, partly due to a lack of quantitative metrics of performance. We compare two motion correction strategies using two figures of merit: displacement introduced by the motion correction and the 95% confidence interval of the cone of uncertainty of voxels with prolate tensors. What follows is a general approach for assessing motion correction of HARDI data that may have broad application for quality assurance and optimization of postprocessing protocols. Our analysis demonstrates two important issues related to motion correction of HARDI data: (1) although neither method we tested was dramatically superior in performance, both were dramatically better than performing no motion correction, and (2) iteration of motion correction can improve the final results. Based on the results demonstrated here, iterative motion correction is strongly recommended for HARDI acquisitions. 相似文献

The magnitude operation changes the signal distribution in MRI images from Gaussian to Rician. This introduces a bias that must be taken into account when estimating the apparent diffusion coefficient. Several estimators are known in the literature. In the present paper, two novel schemes are proposed. Both are based on simple least squares fitting of the measured signal, either to the median (MD) or to the maximum probability (MP) value of the Probability Density Function (PDF). Fitting to the mean (MN) or a high signal-to-noise ratio approximation to the mean (HS) is also possible. Special attention is paid to the case of averaged magnitude images. The PDF, which cannot be expressed in closed form, is analyzed numerically. A scheme for performing maximum likelihood (ML) estimation from averaged magnitude images is proposed. The performance of several estimators is evaluated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We focus on typical clinical situations, where the number of acquisitions is limited. For non-averaged data the optimal choice is found to be MP or HS, whereas uncorrected schemes and the power image (PI) method should be avoided. For averaged data MD and ML perform equally well, whereas uncorrected schemes and HS are inadequate. MD provides easier implementation and higher computational efficiency than ML. Unbiased estimation of the diffusion coefficient allows high resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and may therefore help solving the problem of crossing fibers encountered in white matter tractography. 相似文献

We defined conditions of the laser-aided formation of nanoporous structures with nanopores ranging in size from 40 to 50 nm using laser pulses of 10.6 μm wavelength at a pulse-repetition rate of up to (4-5)×103 Hz for a model metallic material (a two-component alloy “brass of 62%”). It has been established that the exposure to a uniform laser light at depths of up to 25-30 μm results in the formation of nanopores with a relatively uniform distribution across the surface. The resulting pattern contains both solitary pores and ramified porous channels. The nanopores are uniformly distributed within a subgrain, being fairly stable in size and shape. The nanopore size and shape feature larger non-uniformity on the subgrain boundary. The resulting metallic structures show promise for use as catalysts and ultrafiltration membranes. 相似文献

Double-Pulsed-Field-Gradient (d-PFG) MR is emerging as a powerful new means for obtaining unique microstructural information in opaque porous systems that cannot be obtained by conventional single-PFG (s-PFG) methods. The angular d-PFG MR methodology is particularly important since it can utilize the effects of microscopic anisotropy (μA) and compartment shape anisotropy (csA) in the E(ψ) profile at the different tm regimes to provide detailed information on compartment size and eccentricity. An underlying assumption is that the PFGs that are imparted to weigh diffusion are the only gradients present; however, in realistic systems and especially where there are randomly oriented anisotropic pores, susceptibility effects may induce strong internal gradients. In this study, the effects of such internal gradients on E(ψ) plots obtained from angular d-PFG MR and on microstructural information that can be obtained from s-PFG and d-PFG MR were investigated. First, it was found that internal gradients induce a bias in the s-PFG MR results, thus creating an anisotropy that is not related to microstructure, termed apparent-Susceptibility-Induced-Anisotropy (aSIA). We then show that aSIA effects are also manifest in different ways in the angular d-PFG MR experiment in controlled phantoms and in realistic systems such as quartz sand, emulsions, and biological systems. The effects of aSIA in some cases completely masked the effects of μA and csA; however, we subsequently show that by introducing bipolar gradients to the d-PFG MR (bp-d-PFG), the effects of aSIA can be largely suppressed, restoring the E(ψ) plots that are expected from the theory along with the microstructural information that it conveys. We conclude that when specimens are characterized by strong internal gradients, the novel information on μA and csA that is manifest in the E(ψ) plots can indeed be inferred when bp-d-PFG MR is used, i.e. when bipolar gradients are applied. 相似文献

We have investigated the barrier energy for an ammonia molecule to penetrate into ice film by the use of infrared spectroscopy and Xe supersonic beam. After the ice film on a Pt(1 1 1) surface is exposed to ammonia molecules, an umbrella mode of ammonia molecules adsorbed on the ice film has been observed in infrared spectra. After the irradiation of accelerated Xe beam, we observed an energy shift of the mode of ammonia. The shifted mode is assigned to that of ammonia molecules at the interface between the ice film and the Pt(1 1 1) surface. This indicates that the collision with Xe beam induced the penetration of an ammonia molecule to the interface through the ice film. Using this feature, we estimate a barrier for penetration as 0.28 ± 0.03 eV which is much smaller than the one previously reported for bulk ice. 相似文献
