Crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) from the amorphous state has been studied in the temperature range 90°–120°C to characterize the amorphous phase when crystalline microstructure is developing. Small-angle x-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and density measurements were used to investigate the morphology of semi-crystalline materials. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamical mechanical spectroscopy experiments were carried out on amorphous, partially crystallized and crystallized specimens and, when structural relaxation is allowed (thermal treatments close to but below glass transition temperature), strong evidence is obtained for the existence of two different amorphous phases with different mobilities. 相似文献

A versatile two-dimensional gas chromatograph is described, consisting of 2 separate ovens, one intermediate trap, an auxiliary inlet, and the necessary hardware to effect off-line switching according to the principle of Deans. The unit has been designed for use with high resolution glass capillary columns. The performance of individual instrumental components was critically evaluated. Results showed that low dead volume glass to metal connections were required in the manifold and detector lines to minimize extra-column effects. The definitions of the temperature resolution, the so-called resolution of DSC instruments given in literature are discussed.
A new definition of the resolution for DSC instruments is presented and outlined. The main characteristic introduced in this
new definition is a minimum between two caloric events as a prerequisite of an existing resolution. Possible candidates of
test substances have been evaluated. The oligomer n-hexatriacontane is revealing an interesting phenomenon, namely a lambda
transition which is in the peak temperature only 2 K lower than the melting temperature of 76°C. The substance was selected
as an ideal test substance for the quantification of the resolution of DSC instruments. The lambda transition is a second
order process which may reach under certain conditions the saturation of the occurring molecular dislocation within 0.2 K,
and after saturation the heat flow rate drops sharply down. Investigations concerning the main characteristics of n-hexatriacontane
in respect to the temperatures of transition (lambda transition and melting), to the involved enthalpies, and to the resolution
factors were performed as functions of the sample mass and the heating rate. The importance of relevant evaluation procedures
increasing the resolution factors of DSC curves are discussed and these procedures are integrated into the testing of the
resolution. The necessity for widening the experimental scope from instruments to evaluation procedures is forced by the existence
of instruments with built-in signal treatments based on electronic devices and software procedures. A comparison with literature
data is outlined for all of the mentioned characteristic values of n-hexatriacontane.

Curing reactions of the epoxy system consisting of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (BADGE n=0) and m-xylylenediamine (m-XDA) were studied to calculate time-temperature-transformation (TTT) isothermal cure diagram for this system. Gel times were
measured as a function of temperature using solubility test. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to calculate
the vitrification times. DSC data show a one-to-one relationship between T
g and fractional conversion, a independent of cure temperature. As a consequence, T
g can be used as a measure of conversion. The activation energy for the polymerization overall reaction was calculated from
the gel times obtained using the solubility test (41.5 kJ mol-1). This value is similar to the results obtained for other similar epoxy systems. Isoconversion contours were calculated by
numerical integration of the best fitting kinetic model.

The structure and surface properties of ZrO2 strongly depend on its preparation. In the present work the impact of prolonged aging at basic conditions (pH = 9, T = 100°C, t = 48 h), on the phase composition and textural properties, obtained by calcination of the precipitate, was investigated using

The catalyst
used in fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) units of refineries after several
recovery cycles in regeneration units, reduces its activity and it is partially
substituted by new catalyst in the process. As it has a high silicon and aluminum
oxides content, the pozzolanic properties of a Brazilian FCC spent residual
catalyst, used in different substitution degrees to cement, were evaluated
by three thermal analysis techniques during the early stages of hydration
of a type II Portland cement. NCDTA curves show in real time that the residual
catalyst, accelerates the stages of cement hydration. TG and DSC curves of
respective pastes after 24 h of hydration evidence the pozzolanic activity
of the waste, respectively, by the lower water mass loss during the dehydroxylation
of the residual calcium hydroxide and by the lower dehydroxylation endothermal
effect. Within the analyzed period, the higher is the cement substitution

Hemocompatibility is an essential aspect of blood contacting polymers. Knowledge of the relationship between polymer structure and hemocompatibility is important in designing such polymers. In this work, the effect of swelling behavior and states of water on the hemocompatibility of poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PANCNVP) films was studied. Platelet adhesion and plasma recalcification time tests were used to evaluate the hemocompatibility of the films. Considering the importance of surface properties on the hemocompatibility of polymers, static water contact angles were measured by both sessile drop and captive bubble methods. It was found that, on the film surface of PANCNVP with a higher NVP content, adhered platelets were remarkably suppressed and the recalcification time was longer. The total water content adsorbed on the PANCNVP film was determined through swelling experiments performed at temperatures of interest. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to probe the states of water in the films. Based on the results from these experiments, it was hypothesized that the better hemocompatibility of PANCNVP films with higher NVP contents was due to their higher free water content, because water molecule exchange at the polymer/liquid interface, facilitated by a high free water content, is unfavorable for the formation of surface bound water, which causes poor hemocompatibility.
