Some remarks in iterated function spaces

In this paper we give some new topological cardinal inequalities in iterated function spaces. Open questions are posed.     

Large deviations for the Boussinesq equations under random influences

A Boussinesq model for the Bénard convection under random influences is considered as a system of stochastic partial differential equations. This is a coupled system of stochastic Navier–Stokes equations and the transport equation for temperature. Large deviations are proved, using a weak convergence approach based on a variational representation of functionals of infinite-dimensional Brownian motion.     

A stabilized semi-implicit Galerkin scheme for Navier-Stokes equations

By introducing a time relaxation term for the time derivative of higher frequency components, we proposed a stabilized semi-implicit Galerkin scheme for evolutionary Navier-Stokes equations in this paper. Analysis shows that such a scheme has weaker stability conditions than that of a classical semi-implicit Galerkin scheme and, when a suitable relaxation parameter σ is chosen, it generates an approximate solution with the same accuracy as the classical one. That means the proposed scheme might use a larger time step to generate a bounded approximate solution. Thus it is more suitable for long time simulations.     

Homotopic properties of confluent maps in the proper category

We establish some properties of homotopical nature for confluent maps in the proper category. We analyze in this setting the characterization of tree-like continua by J.H. Case and R.E. Chamberlin as well as the theorem by T.B. McLean on the preservation of tree-likeness under confluent maps. We give counterexamples for the corresponding proper analogues and we extend results of several authors in classical continuum theory to non-compact spaces. Finally, we describe the behavior of these maps with respect to the fundamental pro-group, generalizing results of J. Grispolakis and other authors. Two questions of interest are still open (Open Question 15 and Conjecture 24).     

Eigenfunctions of transfer operators and cohomology

The eigenfunctions with eigenvalues 1 or −1 of the transfer operator of Mayer are in bijective correspondence with the eigenfunctions with eigenvalue 1 of a transfer operator connected to the nearest integer continued fraction algorithm. This is shown by relating these eigenspaces of these operators to cohomology groups for the modular group with coefficients in certain principal series representations.     

Thue equations and torsion groups of elliptic curves

A new characterization of rational torsion subgroups of elliptic curves is found, for points of order greater than 4, through the existence of solution for systems of Thue equations.     

A Moderate Deviation Principle for <Emphasis Type="Italic">m</Emphasis>-Dependent Random Variables with Unbounded <Emphasis Type="Italic">m</Emphasis>

In this paper, a theorem on the moderate deviation principle for random arrays under m-dependence with unbounded m is established. This partially extends the results of Chen (Stat. Probab. Lett. 35:123–134, 1997). As an application, the moderate deviation principle for the truncation estimator of the variance in the analysis of time series is obtained.      

Collectionwise normality and selections into Hilbert spaces

A T₁-space X is countably paracompact and collectionwise normal if and only if every l.s.c. mapping from X into a Hilbert space with closed and convex point-images has a continuous selection. This settles a conjecture posed by M. Choban, V. Gutev and S. Nedev [M. Choban, S. Nedev, Continuous selections for mappings with generalized ordered domain, Math. Balkanica (N.S.) 11 (1-2) (1997) 87-95].     

Mechanistic study on dimerization of acetylene with a Nieuwland catalyst

A mechanistic study on the Nieuwland catalysis for dimerization of acetylene is performed by detecting copper–acetylene and copper–monovinylacetylene π‐complexes and also by examining the kinetics under virtually the same reaction conditions employed in the industrial process. An efficient H/D exchange occurs between acetylene and protons in the Nieuwland catalytic system. Addition of a coordinating ligand to the conventional Nieuwland catalytic system results in improvement of the catalytic activity and selectivity for the acetylene dimerization. The kinetic analysis including the kinetic deuterium isotope effect provides valuable insight into the Nieuwland catalytic mechanism of the dimerization of acetylene.
