Summary We have estimated and measured the daily thermal expansion of an oceanographic platform. This has been found negligible as far as the calibration of a satellite altimeter is concerned.     

Letter: Differential Invariants of the Kerr Vacuum

The norms associated with the gradients of the two non-differential invariants of the Kerr vacuum are examined. Whereas both locally single out the horizons, their global behavior is more interesting. Both reflect the background angular momentum as the volume of space allowing a timelike gradient decreases with increasing angular momentum becoming zero in the degenerate and naked cases. These results extend directly to the Kerr-Newman geometry.     

The method of lines solution of discrete ordinates method for radiative heat transfer in cylindrical enclosures

A radiation code based on method of lines solution of discrete ordinates method for radiative heat transfer in axisymmetric cylindrical enclosures containing absorbing-emitting medium was developed and tested for predictive accuracy by applying it to (i) test problems with black and grey walls (ii) a gas turbine combustor simulator enclosing a non-homogeneous absorbing-emitting medium and benchmarking its steady-state predictions against exact solutions and measurements. Comparisons show that it provides accurate solutions for radiative heat fluxes and can be used with confidence in conjunction with CFD codes based on the same approach.     

New poly(butylene succinate)/layered silicate nanocomposites. II. Effect of organically modified layered silicates on structure,properties, melt rheology,and biodegradability

A series of new poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared successfully by simple melt extrusion of PBS and organically modified layered silicates (OMLS). Three different types of OMLS were used for the preparation of nanocomposites: two functionalized ammonium salts modified montmorillonite and a phosphonium salt modified saponite. The structure of the nanocomposites in the nanometer scale was characterized with wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observations. With three different types of layered silicates modified with three different types of surfactants, the effect of OMLS in nanocomposites was investigated by focusing on four major aspects: structural analysis, materials properties, melt rheological behavior, and biodegradability. Interestingly, all these nanocomposites exhibited concurrent improvements of material properties when compared with pure PBS. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measurements of Time-Varying Characteristics of Optical Signals and Inhomogeneities of Tested Substances with Additional Phase Modulation

The problem of investigation of the amplitude and phase structure of a time-varying probing optical signal and the structure of time-varying inhomogeneities of a substance tested by this signal is considered. The analysis is concerned, in particular, with determination of the structure of signals and processes with resolution in the pico- and femtosecond range. The scheme used for the analysis is based on registration of four spatially separated spectra of the studied radiation. The spectra are formed in a four-channel scheme with a twin-wave Michelson interferometer and a spectral device. Modulators based on electrooptical crystals (perovskites) are placed in the channels. The sum spectra are formed: without modulators, with the effect of either of the modulators, and with both of them affecting the radiation. The effect of the studied substance implies either modulating the radiation (in this case it is described by multiplication) or redistributing the radiation (then it is described by convolution).
