Two new poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) derivatives OX1‐PPV and OX2‐PPV bearing two 1,3,4‐oxadiazole rings per repeat unit and a fully conjugated backbone with solubilizing dodecyloxy side groups were synthesized and investigated. The amorphous conjugated polymers had glass‐transition temperature values of 60–75 °C and emitted intense blue or greenish‐blue light in solution with photoluminescence (PL) emission maxima at 379–492 nm and PL quantum yields of 0.41–0.52. In the solid state they emitted yellowish‐green light with PL emission maxima at 533–555 nm. Cyclic voltammetry showed that both conjugated polymers had reversible reduction and irreversible oxidation, making them n‐type materials. The electron affinity of OX2‐PPV was estimated as 2.85 eV whereas that of OX1‐PPV was 2.75 eV. Yellow electroluminescence (EL) was achieved from single‐layer light‐emitting diodes of OX2‐PPV with an EL emission maximum at 555 nm and a brightness of 70 cd/m2. Polymer OX2‐PPV, which was functionalized with 2,6‐bis(1,3,4‐oxadiazole‐2‐yl)pyridine, demonstrated sensitivity to various metal ions as a fluorescence‐mode chemosensor. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We discuss the synthesis and characterization of polyacrylamide (PAM) homopolymers with carefully controlled molecular weights (MWs). PAM was synthesized via free‐radical solution polymerization under conditions that yield highly linear polymer with minimal levels of hydrolysis. The MW of the PAM homopolymers was controlled by the addition of sodium formate (NaOOCH) to the polymerization medium as a conventional chain‐transfer agent. MWs and polydispersity indices (PDIs) were determined via size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering analysis; for polymerizations carried out to high conversion, PAM MWs ranged from 0.23 to 6.19 × 106 g/mol, with most samples having PDI ≈2.0. Zero‐shear intrinsic viscosities of the polymers were determined via low‐shear viscometry in 0.514 M NaCl at 25 °C. Data derived from the polymer characterization were used to determine the chain‐transfer constant to NaOOCH under the given polymerization conditions and to calculate Mark–Houwink–Sakurada K and a values for PAM in 0.514 M NaCl at 25 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article a new receiving mode for scattering light by particle is theoretically discussed. Using this receiving mode the convex lens can be omitted during determining the extinction of particle. Therefore the extinction coefficient of sphere particles is redefined by extrapolating the conventional one. In terms of the calculation results of light scattering the definition of near-field extinction coefficient of a swarm particle is depicted. Through the error analysis it is proved that the error coming from the new definition of extinction coefficient is acceptable for engineering application. In addition, a technique for determining the particle size and density is presented in this article and the advantage using this receiving mode is described.  相似文献

We demonstrate that ultraviolet light can be used to make sterically oriented covalent immobilization of a large variety of protein molecules onto either thiolated quartz, gold or silicon. The reaction mechanism behind the reported new technology involves light-induced breakage of disulphide bridges in proteins upon UV illumination of nearby aromatic amino acids, resulting in the formation of free, reactive thiol groups that will form covalent bonds with thiol reactive surfaces. In general, the protein molecules retain their function. The size of the immobilization spot is limited to the focal point of illumination being as small as a few micrometers. This new technology allows for dense packing of different bio-molecules on a surface, allowing the creation of multi-potent functionalised new materials, such as nano-biosensors. We have developed the necessary technology for preparing large protein arrays of enzymes and fragments of monoclonal antibodies. Dedicated image processing software has been developed for making quality assessment of the protein arrays. This novel technology is ideal to couple drugs and other bio-molecules to nanoparticles which can be used as carriers into cells for therapeutic purposes.  相似文献

In this contribution we report upon our static and dynamic light scattering experiments to characterize soot particles in flames. We studied sooting laminar premixed flame with acetylene as fuel mixed with air as oxidizer. The air equivalence ratio of the combustion was larger than one. We used a Kaskan type burner with circular geometry and a stabilizing flow of nitrogen around the flame. We focused on the determination of the size of the soot particles in the center of the flame as a function of height above burner. In addition we investigated the influence of the mixing ratio of the gases on the size of the particles. Our results show that static light scattering is better suited than dynamic light scattering for a fast and reliable characterization of soot particles in flames. The latter needs detailed a priori information about the flame to allow the unique determination of sizes from the diffusion measurements. The soot particles grow monotonously with height above burner and with decreasing air equivalence ratio. The aggregates have a fractal dimension lower than two.  相似文献

In this paper, light level control is demonstrated using optically induced thermal stress effects in a polarization-maintaining optical fibre. The controlling light beam is absorbed by a blackened segment of the fibre and produces local heating. Light control is demonstrated in the single-ended sensor configuration, which displays a response that cannot be explained from phase delays only, but requires the addition of the coupled mode theory.  相似文献
