Synthesis ofS-(+)-hydroprene

A novel path toS-(+)-hydroprene (1) starting from the technical gradeS-(+)-dihydromyrcene (2, e.e. 50%) is proposed. The latter was selectively transformed intoS-3,7-dimethyloctanal (5) in three steps including hydroalumination. The reactions of5 with allyl- or methallylmagnesium chloride followed, respectively, either by oxygenation in the presence of PdCl₂/CuCl or by ozonolysis, affordS,E-6,10-dimethyl-3-undecen-2-one (7) which was treated with ethoxyethynylmagnesium bromide to give the title juvenile hormone analogue in 23% overall yield.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Synthesis of New Difurocoumarins

5,7-Dihydroxy-4-methyl- and 5,7-dihydroxy-4-trifluoromethylcoumarins are starting compounds in the synthesis of new 10-methyl-8H-difuro[2,3-f;2,3-h]-8-ones and 10-trifluoromethyl-8H-difuro-[2,3-f;2,3-h]chromen-8-ones with high yields.     

Determination of the valence distribution of vanadium in polyolefin catalysts prepared from vanadium trichloride

An electrochemical method has been developed for determining the relative amounts of V(II) and V(III) in polyolefin catalysts prepared using aluminum alkyls and vanadium trichloride. The catalyst, usually obtained as a slurry in n-heptane, is titrated potentiometrically with ceric sulfate using a platinum indicator electrode. Under proper experimental conditions, 2 breaks are obtained, corresponding to the reactions V(II) →V(III) + e and V(III) →V(IV) + e. Interferences from other components of the catalyst are negligible. The method is useful for the analysis of both laboratory catalysts and grab samples taken from pilot plant reactors.     

Spencer cohomologies and symmetry groups

We propose the construction of a spectral sequence converging to Spencer cohomologies. By using symmetry groups of differential equations systems, we manage to unify computations by reduction to the invariant systems over a homogeneous space. The conditions of coincidence of Spencer cohomologies with the cohomologies of an invariant Spencer complex we obtain from the arithmetic of a -characteristic manifold with respect to fundamental weights of the homogeneous space.

Homotopy types for tamely approximable Sobolev maps between manifolds

We define a class ^p (M,N) of Sobolev maps from a manifoldM into a manifoldN, in such a way that each mapu ^p (M, N) has a well defined [p]-homotopy type, providedN satisfies a topological hypothesis. Using this, we prove the existence of minimizers in [p]-homotopy classes for some polyconvex variational problems.     

A note on “small representations of finite distributive lattices as congruence lattices”

G. Grätzer, H. Lakser, and E. T. Schmidt proved that every distributive lattice with n join-irreducible elements can be represented as the congruence lattice of a small lattice L, that is, a lattice L with O(n ² ) elements. G. Grätzer, I. Rival, and N. Zaguia proved that, for any <2, O(n ² ) can not be improved to O(n ). In this note we show that the theorem about small representation can be improved further to get a more delicate result.     

On Segal-Wilson's construction for the τ-functions of the constrained KP hierarchies

In this Letter, we study the constrained KP hierarchies by employing Segal-Wilson's theory on the -functions of the KP hierarchy. We first describe the elements of the Grassmannian which correspond to solutions of the constrained KP hierarchy, and then we show how to construct its rational and soliton solutions from these elements of the Grassmannian.     

Finite energy sectors of the XY model

Continuing the earlier work on soliton sectors, we determine all finite energy representations of the XY model for almost all parameter values. In the interior of unique vacuum regions of parameters (i.e. the large external magnetic field region ||>1), the unique irreducible vacuum representation is the only finite energy representation.At the critical values of the parameters (||=1 as well as theXY symmetric case =0, ||1), there is an infinite number of mutually nonequivalent irreducible finite energy representations. Apart from the unique irreducible ground state representation and another associated irreducible representation, these infinite number of representations arise from an infinite number of nearly zero energy excitations of the ground state with a finite total energy and may be called infrared representations.In the remaining cases, as have been studied earlier, there are two additional irreducible finite energy representations besides two irreducible ground state representations and they are topological soliton sectors with different ground state limits in positive and negative spatial infinity. (For two exceptional values of parameters (, )=(0, ±1), they also become ground state representations.)
