Markov processes associated with L p -resolvents and applications to stochastic differential equations on Hilbert space

We give general conditions on a generator of a C₀-semigroup (resp. of a C₀-resolvent) on L^p(E,μ), p ≥ 1, where E is an arbitrary (Lusin) topological space and μ a σ-finite measure on its Borel σ-algebra, so that it generates a sufficiently regular Markov process on E. We present a general method how these conditions can be checked in many situations. Applications to solve stochastic differential equations on Hilbert space in the sense of a martingale problem are given. Dedicated to Giuseppe Da Prato on the occasion of his 70th birthday     

Invariant measures for equicontinuous semigroups of continuous transformations of a compact Hausdorff space

Equicontinuous semigroups of transformations of a compact Hausdorff space and their sets of all invariant (Borel, regular and probabilistic) measures are studied. Conditions equivalent to the existence of at least one invariant measure are given. The (algebraic and topological) structure of the set of invariant measures is researched.     

Existence of solutions on weak vector equilibrium problems

Weak vector equilibrium problems with bi-variable mappings from product space of two bounded complete locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces to another topological vector space are studied. The existence theorems of solutions are proved by the FKKM fixed point theorem. Viscosity principle of vector equilibrium problems is dealt with. The relations between solutions of the vector equilibrium problem and those of its perturbation problem are presented.     

Ion synthesis and laser annealing of Cu nanoparticles in Al2O3

Al₂O₃ samples with Cu nanoparticles, synthesised by ion implantation at 40 keV with a dose of 1×10¹⁷ ion/cm² and a current density from 2.5 to 12.5 μA/cm², were annealed using ten pulses from a KrF excimer laser with a single pulse fluence of 0.3 J/cm². The copper depth distribution, formation and modification of metal nanoparticles under the ion implantation and laser treatment were studied by Rutherford backscattering (RBS), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical spectroscopy. It was found that laser annealing leads to a reduction in the nanoparticle size without diffusion of metal atoms into the bulk. The change in particle size and the possibility for oxidation of the copper particles are examined in the framework of Mie theory. Calculations presented show that under excimer laser treatment, Cu nanoparticles are more likely to be reduced in size than to undergo oxidation. The existence of smooth densities for the prediction filtering and smoothing problems

The qualitative behavior of buckled states of two different models of elastic beams is studied. It is assumed that random imperfections affect the governing nonlinear equations. It is shown that near the first critical value of the buckling load the stochastic bifurcation is described asymptotically by an algebraic equation whose coeffficients are Gaussian random variables. The corresponding asymptotic expansion for the displacement is to lowest order a Gaussian stochastic process.Work supported by NSF Grant No. DCR81-14726.Work supported by NSF Grant No. DMS87-01895.     

Calabi's diastasis function for Hermitian symmetric spaces

In this paper we study the Calabi diastasis function of Hermitian symmetric spaces. This allows us to prove that if a complete Hermitian locally symmetric space (M,g) admits a Kähler immersion into a globally symmetric space (S,G) then it is globally symmetric and the immersion is injective. Moreover, if (S,G) is symmetric of a specified type (Euclidean, noncompact, compact), then (M,g) is of the same type. We also give a characterization of Hermitian globally symmetric spaces in terms of their diastasis function. Finally, we apply our analysis to study the balanced metrics, introduced by Donaldson, in the case of locally Hermitian symmetric spaces.     

The monotone iterative technique for impulsive hybrid set valued integro-differential equations

We develop the monotone method for impulsive hybrid set integro-differential equations in all its generality. Some interesting observations are presented.     

A remark on Serrin’s Theorem

An approximation theorem for families of weakly coercive convex functions by means of countably many smooth families of convex functions is proved. As a consequence, the classical “three-fold” lower semicontinuity theorem for integral functionals of the Calculus of Variations by James Serrin is unified in one single statement.     

On the existence of nontrivial extremal metrics on complete noncompact surfaces

In this paper, we consider the 2-dimensional local Calabi flow on a complete noncompact surface . Then, based on the Harnack-type estimate, we show the long-time existence and asymptotic convergence of a subsequence of solutions of such a flow on with and bounded from above by a negative constant on a ball. For its applications, this will lead to the existence of extremal metrics on a complete noncompact surface of finite topological type. Existence of 3D-Vortices in Abelian Gauge Theories

We consider the Abelian gauge theory related to the interaction between the solitary waves of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and the electromagnetic field. We analyze the existence of electromagnetostatic solutions and, in particular, of vortices. Dedicated to the memory of Professor Aldo Cossu
