Dimension and entropy of a non-ergodic Markovian process and its relation to Rademacher Riesz Products

Given a Markov chain (not necessarily stationary or homogeneous) with finite state space and an initial distribution, we can construct a measure on the unit interval [0, 1]. In this work we examine the equality (up to a constant) of the Hausdorff dimension of and of a suitably defined entropy for the Markovian process. The results are applied to the so-called Rademacher-Riesz Products.     

Fractal dimension,attractors, and the boussinesq approximation in three dimensions

The Boussinesq approximation, where the viscosity depends polynomially on the shear rate, finds more and more frequent use in geological practice. In the paper, this modified Boussinesq approximation is investigated as a dynamical system for which the existence of a global attractor is proved. Finally, a new criterion for estimating the fractal dimension of invariant sets is formulated and its application to the problem under consideration is illustrated.     

On nonnegative solvability of linear operator equations

LetE be a Banach lattice having order continuous norm. Suppose, moreover,T is a nonnegative reducible operator having a compact iterate and which mapsE into itself. The purpose of this work is to extend the previous results of the authors, concerning nonnegative solvability of (kernel) operator equations on generalL ^p-spaces. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the operator equation 55.gif" alt="lambda" align="BASELINE" BORDER="0">x=T x+y to possess a nonnegative solutionxE wherey is a given nonnegative and nontrivial element ofE and 55.gif" alt="lambda" align="BASELINE" BORDER="0"> is any given positive parameter.     

On some global well-posedness and asymptotic results for quasilinear parabolic equations

We prove that the quasilinear parabolic initial-boundary value problem (1.1) below is globally well-posed in a class of high order Sobolev solutions, and that these solutions possess compact, regular attractors ast+.     

Topological hochschild homology of extensions of ?/p? by polynomials, and of ?[x]/(xn) and ?[x]/(xn?1)

Topological Hochschild homology is calculated for the rings /p[x]/(f(x)) (where p is prime and f(x) /p[x] any polynomial), [x]/(x ⁿ) and [x]/(x ⁿ–1). A spectral sequence argument is used for calculating the homology of the topological Hochschild homology spectrum, from which its stable homotopy structure can be read off since the spectrum is known for a priori reasons to be a restricted product of Eilenberg-MacLane spectra.     

Two combinatorial problems on posets

Bialostocki proposed the following problem: Let nk2 be integers such that k|n. Let p(n, k) denote the least positive integer having the property that for every poset P, |P|p(n, k) and every Z _k -coloring f: P Z _k there exists either a chain or an antichain A, |A|=n and _aA f(a) 0 (modk). Estimate p(n, k). We prove that there exists a constant c(k), depends only on k, such that (n+k–2)²–c(k) p(n, k) (n+k–2)²+1. Another problem considered here is a 2-dimensional form of the monotone sequence theorem of Erdös and Szekeres. We prove that there exists a least positive integer f(n) such that every integral square matrix A of order f(n) contains a square submatrix B of order n, with all rows monotone sequences in the same direction and all columns monotone sequences in the same direction (direction means increasing or decreasing).

We classify all such actions and show that they might be distinguished by their fixed points or by their orbit spaces.
