Coupling and mixing times in a Markov chain

The derivation of the expected time to coupling in a Markov chain and its relation to the expected time to mixing (as introduced by the author [J.J. Hunter, Mixing times with applications to perturbed Markov chains, Linear Algebra Appl. 417 (2006) 108-123] are explored. The two-state cases and three-state cases are examined in detail.     

Boundary Harnack principle for subordinate Brownian motions

We establish a boundary Harnack principle for a large class of subordinate Brownian motions, including mixtures of symmetric stable processes, in κ$\kappa$-fat open sets (disconnected analogue of John domains). As an application of the boundary Harnack principle, we identify the Martin boundary and the minimal Martin boundary of bounded κ$\kappa$-fat open sets with respect to these processes with their Euclidean boundaries.     

Phosphan-, Phosphit- und Phosphido-Komplexe des Vanadiums(V)

Phosphane, Phosphite, Phosphido, Complexes of Vanadium(V) Complex formation of tert-butylimidovanadium(V)trichloride ( 1 ) with phosphanes und phosphites has been studied. Syntheses of phosphidovanadium(V) compounds ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NH^tC₄H₉)[P(SiMe₃)₂] and ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NⁱProp₂)(PR₂) (R?SiMe₃, Ph) are described starting from the corresponding chlorovanadium(V) complexes. The reaction of 1 with silver hexafluorophosphate yields a bis(fluoro)phosphidovanadium(IV complex [(μ-PF₂)₂V₂Cl₂)(N^tC₄H₉)₂]; as primary intermediate product of the unknown redox reaction a cationic vanadium(V) complex [^tC₄H₉N?VCl₂ · PPh₃]⁺PF₆^? has been isolated. 1 reacts with an excess of diisopropylamine forming ^tC₄H₉N?V(NⁱProp₂)Cl₂ ( 16 ); in addition the following diisopropylamido-tert-butylimidovanadium(V) compounds ^tC₄H₉N?VCp(NⁱProp₂)Cl ( 3 ) and ^tC₄H₉N?V(NⁱProp₂)X₂ (X?CH₂CMe₃, O^tC₄H₉, CH₃COO) has been prepared. All compounds obtained are characterized by ¹H, ⁵¹V, ³¹P NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 16 and 3 indicate a planar coordination sphere of the amido nitrogen atom.     

Transgenic Artemisia dubia WALL showed altered phytochemistry and pharmacology

The rol genes have been shown to enhance the production of secondary metabolites in plants. This report examines the effect of trans-genes (rol ABC) on possible high production of biologically important phytochemicals and enhanced pharmacological activities. Three transgenic lines (1, 2 and 3) of Artemisia dubia WALL (transformed with Agrobacterium tumefaciens harboring rol ABC genes) were subjected to phytochemical analysis and pharmacological studies. A great variation in phytochemistry and the pharmacological activities was observed not only between the transgenic and non-transgenic control plants but also among the transgenic lines itself. Comparative chemical profile obtained via HPLC, TLC and spectrophotometry showed high degree of variations in the quantity of phytochemicals. An increased production of total flavonoids (71.1% in transgenic line 2) and total phenolics (110.8% in transgenic line 1), increase in caffeic acid and catechin and a decrease in gallic acid content in the extracts of transformed plants compared to the untransformed control plants was decreased. In case of pharmacological activities, moderate to high level increase in antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activities, cytotoxicity (14.1%), antitumor (29%) and antioxidant activities (23.9%) was observed (in transgenic line 2). In general all the three transgenic lines under study showed improvement in their pharmacological activities in the order of transgenic line 2 > 1 > 3 > control. The implication of these findings will help to meet the increasing demand of pharmacologically important compounds.     

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel triazole derivatives as antifungal agents

A series of 1-(benzylamino)-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-l-yl)propan-2-ols compounds were synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activities in vitro.The results showed that compounds 6A and 6B exhibited good antifungal activity.Compound 6A8 showed the strongest antifungal activity,which was significantly higher than that of the lead compounds and positive-control drugs Fluconazole and Itraconazole.In particular,the antifungal activity of compound 6A8 against Candida albicans and Candida krusei(MIC80 both at 0.00097μg/mL) was 515 and 64 times that of Fluconazole,respectively.The structure-activity relationships of the synthesized compounds were discussed,and the docking model of the target compounds with fungal lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) was analyzed.     

A concise route to the right wing of ciguatoxin

A concise route to the HIJKLM-ring fragment 10 of ciguatoxin (CTX) and 51-hydroxyCTX3C was developed in which oxiranyl anion addition and intramolecular carbonyl olefination were utilized as key transformations. The present procedure requires only 23 steps from the I-ring 5, while 35 steps were employed in a previous synthesis of the corresponding right wing 11 of CTX3C. The high efficiency of the present synthesis ensures a supply of 10 for total synthesis and biomedical applications.
