Partial regularity for certain classes of polyconvex functionals related to nonlinear elasticity

Consider the variational integral where Ω⊂ℝ ⁿ andp≥n≥2. H: (0, ∞)→[0, ∞) is a smooth convex function such that . We approximateJ by a sequence of regularized functionalsJ _δ whose minimizers converge strongly to anJ-minimizing function and prove partial regularity results forJ _δ-minimizers.     

Some graphs with small second eigenvalue

For any prime,p, we construct a Cayley graph on the group,G, of affine linear transformations ofℤ/pℤ of degree 2(p−1) and second eigenvalue with the following special property: the adjacency matrix of the graph is supported on the “blocks” associated to the trivial representation and the irreducible representation of sizep−1. SinceG is of orderp(p−1), the correspondingt-uniform Cayley hypergraph has essentially optimal second eigenvalue for this degree and size of the graph (see [2] for definitions). En route we give, for any integerk>1, a simple Cayley graph onp ^k nodes of degreep of second eigenvalue . Degree of approximation of analytic functions by “near-best” polynomial approximants

We study the rate of approximation of a functionfA(K) in the interior of the compact setK by polynomials, that are close to best polynomial approximants on the whole setK. Lower and upper estimates of possible improvement of convergence (depending on the geometry ofK) are obtained.Communicated by Vilmos Totik.     

q-transformation theory

We obtain the complete set of states of theq-oscillator in both configuration space and momentum space as well as the transformation between these spaces. The states as well as the matrix elements lie in the SU _q (2) algebra. To obtain transition probabilities, one must take the Woronowicz square.     

Relationship between tetrahedron shape measures

Tetrahedron shape measures are used for evaluating the quality of tetrahedra in finite element meshes. Three shape measures, theminimum solid angle _min theradius ratio , and themean ratio , are discussed in this paper. A new formula for the computation of a solid angle of tetrahedron is derived. For different shape measures andv (with values 1), we establish a relationship between andv of the form wherec ₀,c ₁,e ₀, ande ₁ are positive constants. This means that if one measure approaches zero for a poorly-shaped tetrahedron, so does the other. Combined with the property that each measure attains a maximum value only for the regular tetrahedron, this means that the shape measures are equivalent.This work was partially supported by a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.     

Predictable projections for point process filtrations

Summary We consider a point process with the Polish phase space (X,X) and a system of -fields (x),xX, generated by on certain sets (x)X. We define predictability for random processes indexed byX and for random measures onX and prove the existence and uniqueness of predictable and dual predictable projections under a regularity condition on . ForX= ₂ ⁺ and under monotonicity assumptions on the sets x we will identify the predictable projections of some simple processes as regular versions of certain martingales.     

Energy functional depending on elastic strain and chemical composition

In this paper we deal with energy functionals depending on elastic strain and chemical composition and we obtain lower semicontinuity results, existence theorems and relaxation in the spacesH ^1,p(; ⁿ)×L ^q (; ^d) with respect to weak convergence. A weak approach to finite elasticity

On the ground of four axioms we define thekinematics of perfectly elastic bodies and in particular the notion ofweak deformations of a perfectly elastic body. Weak deformations turn out to agree withweak diffeomorphisms introduced in [10], a class of rectifiable currents which enjoys good closure and compactness properties. The invertibility of the product of unbounded Toeplitz operators

In this note I give necessary and sufficient conditions on outer functionsf andg for the operator to be bounded and invertible on H². I also discuss the relationship of this question to two open questions in operator theory and weighted norm inequalities.
