Anharmonic effects in large-amplitude vibrations of metal clusters

Two types of extreme collective motion, large-amplitude many-phonon vibration of the ionic core and rotation of the cluster with high angular momenta, are considered. The interplay between vibration and collective motion towards fission is discussed. A new mechanism of formation and rupture of the neck is proposed which is based on the Franck-Condon principle, and accounts for the interplay between vibration and fission. Under rotation, the change of the shape of the cluster and a phase transition from axially symmetric to triaxial ellipsoid are predicted. For studying the effects, vibrational motion can be induced by laser radiation. Rotational motion may arise in collisions of clusters. Thermal stability of poly(mono-n-alkylitaconates) and mono-n-alkylitaconate-co-vinylpyrrolidone copolymers I

Poly(monoitaconates) containing octyl, decyl and dodecyl groups and random monoalkylitaconate-co-vinylpyrrolidone copolymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Copolymers of mono-n-octylitaconate (MOI), mono-n-decylitaconate (MDI), and mono-n-dodecylitaconate (MDoI), respectively, with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) of different compositions were studied by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal stability of the copolymers depends on the structure of the monoitaconate comonomer and on the composition of the copolymer The kinetic analysis of the degradation data shows that the thermal decomposition of these copolymers can be described by several kinetic orders depending on the copolymer and on the composition. The relative thermal stability of the copolymers increases as the VP content increases and as the length of the side chain of the itaconate increases, following the same trend as the flexibility of the copolymers in solution.     

The excited states of pyrazine: A basis set study

Summary Multiconfigurational second order perturbation theory (CASSCF/CASPT2) has been used to investigate the dependence of computed valence excitation energies and transition moments on the basis sets. Pyrazine has been selected as the test molecule. Atomic normal orbital (ANO) type basis sets are used throughout. Contractions of the structure (4s3p1d/2s) are found to be an optimal compromise between the quality and the size of the calculations and are capable of yielding results virtually identical to more extended basis sets.     

19F NMR study of relative polarities and reactivities of N-H,N-Hg,and N-Au bonds in 2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzimidazole and its PhHg and Ph3PAu derivatives in intermolecular exchange

It has been shown by the¹⁹F NMR method that the relative polarities of nitrogenelement bonds in 2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzimidazole and its PhHg and PPh₃Au derivatives increase in the order N-H19F NMR. It has been found that these reactions occur by a bimolecular associative mechanism and that the N-H bond is substantially less reactive than the N-Hg and N-Au bonds, which have identical reactivities within the limits of sensitivity of the method used.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Microbial Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation of Ketones by Cyclohexanone and Cyclopentanone Monooxygenase – A Computational Rational for Biocatalyst Performance

Summary. Recombinant Escherichia coli overexpressing Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 9872 cyclopentanone monooxygenase (CPMO, EC 1.14.13.16) and Acinetobacter sp. NCIMB 9871 cyclohexanone monooxygenase (CHMO, EC 1.14.13.22) have been utilized in whole-cell Baeyer-Villiger biotransformations of prochiral bicycloketones. A significant difference in substrate acceptance and stereoselectivity was observed for bicyclo[3.3.0] and bicyclo[4.3.0] substrates. A plausible mechanism of these transformations was established by means of high level DFT/B3LYP calculations suggesting an essential difference in electronic requirements for a successful enzymatic conversion, which was similarly encountered in recombinant whole-cell mediated biooxidations. Some of the lactones produced in the biocatalytic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation represent key intermediates for the synthesis of indole alkaloids.     

A mixed directed-undirected data structure for a parallel implementation of a domain decomposition algorithm

The choice of data structures influences the parallelization, efficiency and the manageability of a mesh refinement program. We introduce a mixed directed-undirected graph that combines both communication and scheduling needs. An inverted index is maintained for the directed graph to improve code performance and readability.This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under contract No. W-7405-Eng-48.     

Ab initio study of sodium intercalation into metal oxides

Using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method, we have studied the effect of chemistry on the average intercalation voltage (AIV) caused by the Na ions intercalating into transition metal oxides. The effect of transition metal was systematically studied by varying M=Co, Ni and Mn in NaMO₂ and fixing the α-NaFeO₂ layered structure. The effect of the guest atoms into the host material is discussed in terms of the structural and electronic properties. Comparatively to Li intercalation, a significant electron transfer towards transition metal was found. This observation suggests that the transition metal contribute to the AIV determination and confirms the common assumption that intercalated electron reduces M⁴⁺ to M³⁺.
