Active transport of Na + and K + through animal cell membranes

The transport of Na⁺ out of the cell and K⁺ into the cell against a concentration gradient is catalyzed by a (Na⁺ + K⁺)-activated ATPase. The way in which the cations pass through the cell membrane has not yet been elucidated. Studies on the ATP hydrolysis revealed a Na⁺-dependent phosphorylation of the enzyme protein; the conformation of the enzyme also appears to change. The energy required for transport of the cations against their concentration gradients is probably provided by K⁺-dependent hydrolysis of the enzyme-bound phosphate. The enzyme can synthesize ATP from inorganic phosphate and ADP on reversal of the cation concentration gradient. By keeping the enzyme in a particular conformation, the cardiac glycoside ouabain specifically inhibits the Na⁺ pump.     

Nonequilibrium fluctuations in μ space

The properties of fluctuations in space in or outside thermal equilibrium are obtained by solving hierarchies of equations derived either from the Liouville or the Master equation. In particular we study the one-, two-, etc., time correlation functions that describe the spatial and temporal behavior of the fluctuations in space. Explicit solutions are obtained for a dilute gas. The Langevin approach is briefly discussed. Our results are compared with those obtained in the extensive literature, which is reviewed in some detail.     

On triazoles XIX: The reaction of 5-amino-1,2,4-triazoles with functionalized acetoacetic esters

Summary Different functionalized alkyl 3-oxo-butyrates (2) were reacted with 5-amino-3-Q-1H-1,2,4-triazoles (1) to yield3 and4 type 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidinones. In case of2 (R ¹=methyl,R ²=1-ethoxycarbonylethyl,R ³=ethyl) beside the corresponding derivative4 the unexpected 5,6-dihydro-6,8-dimethyl-7-ethoxycarbonyl-3-methylthio-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]-1,3-diazepin-5(9H)-one (7) was isolated, representing a novel ring system.

Über Triazole, 19. Mitt.: Die Reaktion von 5-Amino-1,2,4-triazolen mit funktionalisierten Acetoessigestern

Zusammenfassung Verschiedene funktionalisierte 3-Oxo-buttersäurealkylester (2) wurden mit 5-Amino-3-Q-1H-1,2,4-triazolen (1) umgesetzt, wobei 1,2,4-Triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidinone der Typen3 und4 erhalten wurden. Im Fall von2 (R ¹=Methyl,R ²=1-Ethoxycarbonylethyl,R ³=Ethyl) wurde neben dem erwarteten Derivat4 das unerwartete 5,6-Dihydro-6,8-dimethyl-7-ethoxycarbonyl-3-me-thylthio-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]-1,3-diazepin-5(9H)-on (7) isoliert, welches ein neues Ringsystem darstellt.

     

Existence,nonexistence and multiplicity results for nonlocal Dirichlet problems

In this paper we establish various existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results for fully nonlinear Dirichlet problems associated to nonlocal Hamilton–Jacobi equations. This study is accomplished by a careful analysis of the principal eigenvalues of the elliptic operator. Resonance phenomena and anti maximum principles are also established.     

Effects of laser irradiation on optical properties of a-Se100−x Te x thin films

The effect of laser irradiation on the optical properties of thermally evaporated Se_100?x Te _x (x=8, 12, 16) chalcogenide thin films has been studied. The result shows that the irradiation causes a shift in the optical gap. The results have been analyzed on the basis of laser irradiation-induced defects in the film. The width of the tail of localized state in the band gap has been evaluated using the Urbach edge method. As the irradiation time increases, the values of the optical energy gap for all compositions decrease, while tail energy width increases. It is also observed that the optical energy gap decreases with increasing Te content in the alloy. These changes are a consequence of an increment in disorder produced by laser irradiation in the amorphous structure of thin film.     

Amplitude modulation control of escape from a potential well

We demonstrate the effectiveness of periodic amplitude modulations in controlling (suppressing and enhancing) escape from a potential well through the universal model of a damped Helmholtz oscillator subjected to an external periodic excitation (the escape-inducing excitation) whose amplitude is periodically modulated (the escape-controlling excitation). Analytical and numerical results show that this multiplicative control works reliably for different subharmonic resonances between the two periodic excitations involved, and that its effectiveness is comparable to those of different methods of additive control. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of the multiplicative control against the presence of low-intensity Gaussian noise.     

Fields,particles and universality in two dimensions

We discuss the use of field theory for the exact determination of universal properties in two-dimensional statistical mechanics. After a compact derivation of critical exponents of main universality classes, we turn to the off-critical case, considering systems both on the whole plane and in presence of boundaries. The topics we discuss include magnetism, percolation, phase separation, interfaces, wetting.     

Synthesis of 3-Substituted Pyrido[4′,3′:4,5]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidines and Related Fused Thiazolo Derivatives

New ethyl 3-(substituted)-4-oxo-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydropyrido[4',3':4,5]thieno-[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carboxylates ( 3a , b ), ( 6 ),( 11-13 ), ethyl 3-methyl-5-oxo-2,3,6,9-tetrahydro 5 H -pyrido[4',3':4,5]thieno[2,3-d][1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-8(7H)-carboxylate ( 4 ), and ethyl 2-methyl-5-oxo-2,3,6,9-tetrahydro-5 H -pyrido[4',3':4,5]thieno[2,3-d][1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]-pyrimidine-8(7H)-carboxylate ( 8 ) have been synthesized from diethyl 2-isothiocyanato-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrothieno[2,3-c]pyridine-3,6-dicarboxylate 1. The structure of these compounds as well as their intermediates have been established by their spectral data.     

Chemistry of bicyclic 5-6 systems: Synthesis of oxazolo[3,2-a]pyridines and their salts with a ring-junction nitrogen atom

The present review highlights the synthetic procedures reported for the preparation of oxazolo[3,2-a]pyridines as a class of 5-6 bicyclic heterocycles with a nitrogen atom at the ring junction. The different sections included the synthesis of the investigated analogs through the reactions of (1) β-ketoesters with α,β-unsaturated ketones (2) δ-oxoacids or esters or unsaturated carboxylic acids with glycinol derivatives (3) unsaturated ketoesters with enamines (4) ethoxymethylenes with amidoglycinol derivatives (5) pyridinium salts with phenylglycinol (6) Multicomponent reactions, and (7) Synthesis of tetracyclic systems. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate a synopsis of the synthesis of compounds containing oxazolo[3,2-a]pyridine skeleton with high yields using readily and accessible starting materials, and efficient synthetic routes until now. The stereochemistry of the obtained enantiopure heterocycles, the isolation of the isomers and the reaction mechanisms of the unexpected products are discussed.
