1-Acyldeoxyvasicinone salts as effective intermediate C-and N-acylating agents for alkaloids and amino acids

The reaction of deoxyvasicinone with acid chlorides of aliphatic (acetylbromide) and aromatic (benzoyl-, o-, p-methoxy-, p-nitrobenzoylchlorides) acids was studied. It was shown that 1-deoxyvasicinone salts were formed at room temperature; α-aroyloxymethylidenedeoxyvasicinones, in the presence of triethylamine at 80–85°C. It was found that acid chlorides cause 1-acyldeoxyvasicinone salts to transform into α-hydroxy-or α-aroyloxyarylidenedeoxyvasicinones, which indirectly confirmed their acylating properties. It was found that 1-acyldeoxyvasicinone salts were effective acylating agents for alkaloids (cytisine, 1,2-dihydrodeoxyvasicinone) and amino acids (glycine, β-alanine, α-aminobutyric acid) and can be used to acylate primary and secondary aliphatic and heterocyclic amines. __________ Translated from Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 6, pp. 585–589, November–December, 2006.     

HPLC determination of urinary 2,4- and 2,6-toluendiamines as potential degradation products of polyurethane breast implants

Summary A reversed-phase HPLC method has been developed for the urinary determination of mutagenic 2,4- and 2,6-toluendiamines. These amines are degradation products of polyurethane, a material used to cover textured silicone breast implants. FMOC-Cl was used as fluorescent derivatising agent in order to obtain a limit of detection of 15 ng/ml in urine. Pre-treatment of urine samples was by liquid/liquid extraction and urine specimens of patients after surgury were analysed.     

Racemization of chiral amino alcohols III: Effect of Mg or Ca addition on the activity and stability of the Co/γ-Al2O3 catalyst

The racemization of R-(-)-2-amino-1-butanol in a reaction using Co/γ-Al₂O₃ catalysts and catalysts modified by Mg or Ca was investigated in this paper. Complete racemization was achieved with a yield of over 83% at using the Mg modified Co/γ-Al₂O₃ catalyst under optimized reaction conditions of 170°C and 2.5 MPa of H₂. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized by XRD, XPS, TPR, SEM and TEM. The addition of Mg and Ca may be advantageous for dispersing and stabilizing the active species of the Co/γ-Al₂O₃ catalyst, protecting from sintering, significantly improving its catalytic activity and stability.     

Wavelength-modulated,continuum-source excited atomic fluorescence spectrometric system for wear metals in jet engine lubricating oils using electrothermal atomization

A system for measuring atomic fluorescence of atoms produced via an electrically-heated graphite filament in a flame (acetylene/air or acetylene/nitrous oxide) and excited with a 300-W Eimac xenon are lamp is described. The experimental system also included wavelength modulation for background emission/fluorescence/scatter correction and an optically-triggered electronic integrator for efficient monitoring of the analyte fluorescence signal. Copper, aluminum and molybdenum were determined in jet engine lubricating oil samples (1 μl) with no pretreatment. The determinations are evaluated with respect to the accuracy and repeatability criteria of the U.S. Joint Oil Analysis Program.     

(R)-2,3-Cyclohexylideneglyceraldehyde, a novel template for facile and simple entry into chiral hydroxy γ-lactones: synthesis of (−)-muricatacin

(R)-2,3-Cyclohexylideneglyceraldehyde 1 has been used in a simple and efficient synthesis of (−)-muricatacin 10. The required chiron, syn-alkanetriol 2a was prepared by the reduction of a ketone 3 derived from 1.     

Partial molal volumes of ions in organic solvents from ultrasonic vibration potential and density measurements. III. Dimethylsulfoxide

The partial molal volumes of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, Cs⁺, Cl^–, Br^–, I^–, and NO ₃ ^- in DMSO at 25°C have been determined from ultrasonic vibration potential data and density data for solutions of uni-univalent electrolytes. Hepler's semiemprirical equation has been used to split ionic partial molal volumes into geometric and electrostrictive contributions. The results obtained in this work confirm the conclusion of our previous studies, namely, that the contribution of electrostriction is essentially determined by the properties of that layer of atoms, 0.3 to 0.4 nm thick, in contact with the ion and by the degree of steric hindrance of the poles of the dipole of the solvent molecule. On the other hand, the geometric contribution depends on the size of the solvent molecule and also on the arrangement of the solvent molecules about the ions. It is shown that the geometric contribution to the partial molal volume of ions is largely increased when ions cannot come close enough to the poles of the solvent-molecule dipole, owing to steric hindrance.     

Use of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate room temperature ionic liquids as chelate extraction solvent with 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedione

Possible use of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as chelate extraction solvent was evaluated by using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF₆]), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([hmim][PF₆]) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([omim][PF₆]). These RTILs showed high extraction performance for divalent metal cations with 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedione (Htta). The extracted metals were back-extracted into 1 mol dm⁻³ nitric acid quantitatively. Furthermore, the extracted species were estimated as neutral hydrated complexes M(tta)₂(H₂O)_n (n= 1 or 2) for M = Ni, Cu and Pb and anionic complexes M(tta)₃⁻ for M = Mn, Co, Zn and Cd.     

Complexation of 6-Deoxy-6-(aminoethyl)amino-β-cyclodextrin with Sodium Cholate and Sodium Deoxycholate

In order to study its guest binding and the inclusion phenomena, 6-deoxy-6-(aminoethyl)amino--cyclodextrin (CDN) was synthesised and its binding properties examined. The complexation phenomena of sodium cholate (NaC) and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) with CDN has been monitored by the NMR method using ¹³C chemical shift data. The method of continuous variation Job's method has been used to determine the stoichiometry of these supramolecular complexes. The Job's plot confirms the 1 : 1 supramolecular complex for NaC: CDN and the 1 : 2 supramolecular complex for NaDC: CDN. The interaction of NaC and NaDC with CDN has been obtained through two-dimensional Rotational Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (ROESY) NMR. Equilibrium constants were also obtained from ¹³C chemical shift data (C-1, C-3 & C-4) at different pH values (7, 9, & 11).     

A facile method for the synthesis of 3,1-benzooxazines from N-acyl-2-(alk-2-enyl)anilines

Electrophilic addition of HCl or Br₂ to N-acyl-2-(alk-2-enyl)anilines is accompanied by intramolecular cyclization of these amides to give 3,1-benzooxazine hydrochlorides or hydrobromides in high yields.
