Local polynomial fitting under association

We consider the estimation of multivariate regression functions r(x₁,…,x_d) and their partial derivatives up to a total order p1 using high-order local polynomial fitting. The processes {Y_i,X_i} are assumed to be (jointly) associated. Joint asymptotic normality is established for the estimates of the regression function r and all its partial derivatives up to the total order p. Expressions for the bias and variance/covariance matrix (of the asymptotic distribution) are given.     

Minimax Theorems Involving Two Functions and Strictly Monotone Transformations of Their Values

Two two-function minimax theorems are proved.The concavity-convexity conditions of the twofunctions involve strictly monotone transformations and mixing of the values of the two functions,and aredescribed by the inequalities as upward and weakly downward conditions.     

Generalized KKM Type Theorems in FC-Spaces with Applications (I)

The class KKM(X,Y) (resp., s-KKM(X,Y,Z)) of set-valued mappings with KKM (resp., s-KKM) property is introduced in FC-spaces without any convexity structure. Some generalized KKM (resp., s-KKM) type theorems are proved in FC-spaces under much weak assumptions. As applications, some new section theorems and coincidence theorems are established in FC-spaces. These theorems generalize many known results in literature. The further applications of these results will be given in a follow-up paper.     

Aliasing Effects and Sampling Theorems of Spherical Random Fields when Sampled on a Finite Grid

Aliasing effects are investigated for spherical random fields sampled on a finite grid. Using the spherical harmonics expansion, it is shown that for a band-limited spherical random field its trend and spectrum can be uniquely reconstructed from the sampled field if the sampling points are judiciously designed. Analytical expressions are also obtained for aliasing errors in the trend and the spectrum when the field is not band-limited.     

Polynomial-time approximation schemes for packing and piercing fat objects

We consider two problems: given a collection of n fat objects in a fixed dimension, (1) ( packing) find the maximum subcollection of pairwise disjoint objects, and (2) ( piercing) find the minimum point set that intersects every object. Recently, Erlebach, Jansen, and Seidel gave a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the packing problem, based on a shifted hierarchical subdivision method. Using shifted quadtrees, we describe a similar algorithm for packing but with a smaller time bound. Erlebach et al.'s algorithm requires polynomial space. We describe a different algorithm, based on geometric separators, that requires only linear space. This algorithm can also be applied to piercing, yielding the first PTAS for that problem.     

An existence theorem for neutral variational problems of Bolza

This note proves an existence theorem for a generalized Bolza-type problem that has time delays in both the state and velocity variables. The assumptions are stated in terms of a modification of the classical Hamiltonian, and extend ideas of Rockafellar to the delay case.     

Moment vanishing properties of harmonic Bergman functions

We show that Poisson integrals belonging to certain weighted harmonic Bergman spaces b_δ^p on the upper half-space must have the moment vanishing properties. As an application, we show that b₀^p, p?1, contains a dense subspace whose members have the horizontal moment vanishing properties. Also, we derive related weighted norm inequalities for Poisson integrals. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization for Poisson integrals of continuous functions with compact support in order to belong to b_δ^p.     

The Module Structure Theorem for Sobolev Spaces on Open Manifolds

We prove a general embedding theorem for Sobolev spaces on open manifolds of bounded geometry and infer from this the module structure theorem. Thereafter we apply this to weighted Sobolev spaces.     

Interpolation by a Game

We introduce a notion of a real game (a generalisation of the Karchmer-Wigderson game (cf. [3]) and of real communication complexity, and relate this complexity to the size of monotone real formulas and circuits. We give an exponential lower bound for tree-like monotone protocols (defined in [4, Definition 2.2]) of small real communication complexity solving the monotone communication complexity problem associated with the bipartite perfect matching problem. This work is motivated by a research in interpolation theorems for prepositional logic (by a problem posed in [5, Section 8], in particular). Our main objective is to extend the communication complexity approach of [4, 5] to a wider class of proof systems. In this direction we obtain an effective interpolation in a form of a protocol of small real communication complexity. Together with the above mentioned lower bound for tree-like protocols this yields as a corollary a lower bound on the number of steps for particular semantic derivations of Hall's theorem (these include tree-like cutting planes proofs for which an exponential lower bound was demonstrated in [2]).
