Hamiltonian formulation of anisotropic elasticity

The general expression of Hamiltonian partial differential equation for 3-D anisotropic elasticity is derived in this paper. It is a two-variable mixed formulation based on which new analytic and semi-analytic methods can be introduced.     

Deformation Dynamics and the Gauss–Bonnet Topological Term in String Theory

We show that there exists a nontrivial contribution on the Witten covariant phase space when the Gauss–Bonnet topological term is added to the Dirac–Nambu–Goto action describing strings, because the geometry of deformations is modified, and on such space we construct a symplectic structure. Future extensions of the present results are outlined.     

Block Algorithms for Orthogonal Symplectic Factorizations

On the basis of a new WY-like representation block algorithms for orthogonal symplectic matrix factorizations are presented. Special emphasis is placed on symplectic QR and URV factorizations. The block variants mainly use level 3 (matrix-matrix) operations that permit data reuse in the higher levels of a memory hierarchy. Timing results show that our new algorithms outperform standard algorithms by a factor 3–4 for sufficiently large problems.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Composition methods in the presence of small parameters

We derive numerical methods for arbitrary small perturbations of exactly solvable differential equations. The methods, based in one instance on Gaussian quadrature, are symplectic if the system is Hamiltonian and are asymptotically more accurate than previously known methods.
