Finite volume schemes for nonhomogeneous scalar conservation laws: error estimate

Summary. In this paper, we study finite volume schemes for the nonhomogeneous scalar conservation law with initial condition . The source term may be either stiff or nonstiff. In both cases, we prove error estimates between the approximate solution given by a finite volume scheme (the scheme is totally explicit in the nonstiff case, semi-implicit in the stiff case) and the entropy solution. The order of these estimates is in space-time -norm (h denotes the size of the mesh). Furthermore, the error estimate does not depend on the stiffness of the source term in the stiff case. On kth-order embeddings of K3 surfaces and Enriques surfaces

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a big and nef line bundle L of any degree on a K3 surface or on an Enriques surface S to be k-very ample and k-spanned. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a spanned and big line bundle on a K3 surface S to be birationally k-very ample and birationally k-spanned (our definition), and relate these concepts to the Clifford index and gonality of smooth curves in |L| and the existence of a particular type of rank 2 bundles on S. On convergence properties of a least-distance programming procedure for minimization problems under linear constraints

In Ref. 1, Bazaraa and Goode provided an algorithm for solving a nonlinear programming problem with linear constraints. In this paper, we show that this algorithm possesses good convergence properties.This paper was written under the guidance of Associate Professor C. Y. Wang. 2007 Abel prize has been awarded to S R S Varadhan for creating a unified theory of large deviations. We attempt to give a flavour of this branch of probability theory, highlighting the role of Varadhan.     

Convergence of series of dependent φ-subgaussian random variables

The almost sure convergence of weighted sums of φ-subgaussian m-acceptable random variables is investigated. As corollaries, the main results are applied to the case of negatively dependent and m-dependent subgaussian random variables. Finally, an application to random Fourier series is presented.     

On some configurations related to the Shelah Weak Hypothesis

On strong and total Lagrange duality for convex optimization problems

We give some necessary and sufficient conditions which completely characterize the strong and total Lagrange duality, respectively, for convex optimization problems in separated locally convex spaces. We also prove similar statements for the problems obtained by perturbing the objective functions of the primal problems by arbitrary linear functionals. In the particular case when we deal with convex optimization problems having infinitely many convex inequalities as constraints the conditions we work with turn into the so-called Farkas-Minkowski and locally Farkas-Minkowski conditions for systems of convex inequalities, recently used in the literature. Moreover, we show that our new results extend some existing ones in the literature.
